An Eerie, Spiritual Trip Through Human Nature

This is one of my favorite films of all time. This beautifully crafted film is a work of art, poetry, spirituality, and psychology rolled into one. The main character is believable and real, and seems to represent the anima that is so much a part of our primal human nature-especially as it connects to the sense of scent. The cinematography is lush, gorgeous, and intoxicating.
I work with rare sacred oils and arcane perfumery, and this movie quickly grew close to my heart. There is a full and robust intangible dimension within the sensory world. One that we cannot touch, but that we can feel with our souls. Like a distant memory that slowly drifts into focus, a smell can awaken parts of ourselves that we overlook in the hustle and bustle of day to day experience. This film seems to capture the magick of perfumery in a beautiful, if not terribly disturbing way.
Though on the surface the main character is diabolical, intrinsically he is so very human. Looking for love in all the wrong places, he sought out only what he knew. His character is the perfect paradox of good and evil, innocent and impure. There are many, many layers to this film. It is a virtual treasure chest of poetic metaphor.
