It's easy to see why Stereomud's debut album PERFECT SELF became a success so quickly. It leads off with a perfect anthem of alienation, "Leave (Back Up)," which perfectly articulates the sentiments of any teenager who's ever felt suffocated by his or her parents. The claustrophobic feel of the tightly compressed guitar riffs and pounding rhythms (a Stereomud staple) create just the right mood to go along with the lyrics. Stereomud is an offshoot of underground heroes Life of Agony, but on PERFECT SELF the group amply defines its own identity. The key to the Stereomud sound is the way the songs move from all-out charging heaviness to a more supple, syncopated feel. Unlike so many of their peers, this band has a strong sense of dynamics, enabling them to successfully navigate hard rock waters without getting lost in a sea of monotony.
