Reissued several times in various forms since its initial 1987 release, Spacemen 3's second album is a remarkable departure from the band's 1986 debut, SOUND OF CONFUSION. Reduced to a trio (guitarists/keyboardists Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember, Jason "Spaceman" Pierce, and bassist Pete Bassman) following the departure of the first album's drummer, Spacemen 3 makes an asset out of the newfound lack of percussion, giving THE PERFECT PRESCRIPTION a considerably less rock-oriented sound with much more open space in its varied, subtle arrangements. Highlights include one of Spacemen 3's finest cover versions, an extremely long, beautifully lush, violin-accented meditation on the Red Krayola's classic "Transparent Radiation," as well as the foreboding "Take Me to the Other Side." The album title introduces Pierce's pharmaceutical fixation, further developed in later Spacemen 3 album titles and Spiritualized cover art, but this album sounds suitably mind-warping on its own.

4 stars out of 5 -- Spacemen 3 truly enter the outerworld. Each drifting headtrip slowly, but delicately, flutters in the ether, fueled by carefully plucked notes and sweeping violins.
