Publisher's Note
The rivalry between father and son. Juan Valera (1827-1905), was one of the first Spanish novelists using psychological realism, with search of expression of ideas and a refined description of characters. The story of the seminarian in love with the widower father's fiancé and the conflicts that this rivalry creates, are truthfully described in a novel where irony is mixed with an original plot development (most of the work uses the epistolary genre) and by an unexpected conclusion. The feelings of all the characters are crystallized in what is considered one of the greatest Spanish novels of the 19th century.
