Album Notes Recorded at D&D Studios, New York, New York. Before the release of their first group album in 1997, the Boot Camp Clik had already made a name for themselves in the East Coast underground. With now-classic efforts from the collective's members--Black Moon's ENTA DA STAGE, Smif-N-Wessun's DAH SHININ, Heltah Skeltah's NOCTURNAL, and O.G.C.'s DA STORM--leading up to the release of FOR THE PEOPLE, expectations were sky-high. And with the in-house production duo Da Beatminerz conspicuously absent, the group relied on beats from crew chief Buckshot and Boogie Brown, as well as underground producers Shawn J. Period, Shaleek, and EZ Elpee, among others. The resulting sound is a volatile and, at times, uneven blend of sparse live instrumentation, tinny traditional Japanese music samples, and frenetic dancehall grooves far removed from the murky boom-bap that the Clik was known for. Still, FOR THE PEOPLE holds its share of gems. The Tony Touch-produced opening track, "Down By Law," a throwback posse cut over an infectious old-school beat, showcases each MC's versatility as they spit effortlessly upbeat party-people verses.
