Pennies From Heaven (DVD, 2004)

This is a strange and unique movie about a man who relates to the world through the lyrics of the music he both sells and loves. He is a bit of a dubious character; dishonest and misogynistic, which adds to the strangeness of the film because one would assume a man "with a song in his heart" would be a character of heart-warming charm. Instead there is a poingiant contrast between the songs lip-synched by the characters and the reality of their lives in this rather dark but engaging film.

The song and dance numbers are magical. The story has an unusual plot development that explores the psyche of the depraved. Quite a contrast to the Pollyanna-like Bing Crosby version of 1936. My husband has had fun making his own composite dvds of his favorite musical numbers. The tape was sealed and in brand new condition.

I bought this movie because my brother recommended it for the dancing, from the title I was expecting a light hearted story, such as "Me and my Gal". No, it is more depressing with some strange scenes. I didn't know it was rated R, I should have looked and then realized it was not what I thought, and didn't care for the end at all.
I should add that the tap dancing was excellent though and I enjoyed seeing Steve Martin and Christopher Walken perform.
