This gifted diva is grooving to the beat of another drummer. From the rootsy spiritual harmonies of "Stand" which open THE PENDULUM VIBE, to the closing cries of "Freedom," Joi carves out a new niche for herself in the crowded, me-too world of contemporary R&B. The challenge: how to address a variety of moods, styles and subjects, to be a modern woman, a stylist, and an original. With THE PENDULUM VIBE, Joi has met that challenge, and then some: sexy, reflective and smart, Joi projects toughness and tenderness, sensuality and self-control, as she finds her own voice in black genres that range from gospel and jazz, through funk and blues into her own evolving style of post-hip hop balladry. Not to mention Joi's poignant rendition of "Adoramus Te Christ," a classical piece one might more readily associate with Miss Marian Anderson than an R&B diva. But Joi is unafraid to address music which might have a universal appeal that transcends R&B. On her single "I Found My Niche," self-love triumphs over carnal love, and the aura of respect she demands surmounts her romantic feelings. Likewise, "Sunshine & The Rain" depicts the ambivalence and inertia the singer feels, the palpable pressure to grow and evolve, the constant cycling of emotions. Still, she is capable of exploring the sexual ambiguity of her attraction to "Narcissa Cutie Pie" with almost unbearable sensuality, as producer Dallas Austin provides just the right combination of beat box boogie and classic soul.
