Album Notes DJ John Peel became one of the most influential men in the British music scene with this almost unerring ability to pick the "next big thing." His radio show airs specially recorded live-in-the-studio sessions, usually of four songs, by whatever band he favors that week. Often, artists use this opportunity to promote current singles and occasionally perform covers. Wire, on the other hand, for the most part used its Peel Sessions to demo new material, some of which never appeared on the band's studio albums. The first session was recorded in January of 1978, and includes a faster version of PINK FLAG's "106 Beats That," two tracks from the subsequent CHAIRS MISSING, and "Culture Vulture," a track unique to the session. The second set of four, recorded in early September of 1978, features alternate versions of songs that would subsequently appear on 154. Probably of most interest to Wire fans was the band's third Peel Session. Recorded on September 11, 1979, the third session produced just one track, the freaky (and lengthy!) soundscape "Crazy About Love," which had evolved from of various rehearsal jams over the preceding year. Perhaps not the best place to begin learning about Wire, but essential for fans.
