Album Notes Not to be confused with Jelly Roll Morton's 1938 Library of Congress recording of the same name, this 23-track collection, also entitled THE PEARLS, cherry-picks the most essential tracks from over 10 years in Morton's career, reaching back to his landmark 1926 recordings with his Red Hot Peppers and continuing into the late '30s when he led a small jazz combo (which is somewhat reminiscent of Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives or Sevens). Morton's influence on jazz, and the far-reaching effects of his innovations, cannot be overestimated. With his combination of Dixieland swing, hot New Orleans-bred syncopation, W.C. Handy-esque melodic charm, and a technical dexterity that recalls the virtuosity of classical musicians, Morton wrote a good chunk of jazz's rule book. There are a lot of compilations that testify to Morton's achievements, but this superb set is one of the most convincing.
