Soul Jazz pianist Gail Johnson takes her cues from the innovations of artists like Lonnie Liston Smith and Horace Silver, who fused the demanding virtuosity and playful chord structures of bop with the metronomic pulse of classic soul music. On PEARLS, Johnson supplements these influences with a smattering of electronic textures, hip-hop influenced drum programming, and even some of the meditative moods of classic smooth jazz, making for a surprisingly eclectic and rewarding listen.
