  Apple's mature follow-up to "Tidal"

Fiona Apple's "Tidal" is a beautiful, well-rounded album. That said, her second album, "When the Pawn...," is extraordinarily mature and a perfect follow-up. After showing us she could sing about heartbreak and failed relationships, she comes back to show us that she can kick ass while getting over the men who broke her heart in the first place. "When the Pawn..." demonstrates her piano skills, which are quite elevated, to a higher degree. Her music composition is also more complicated and evolved, and her lyrics are more compelling than ever.
Apple is clearly multi-talented, since she can write very precise lyrics (by themselves, many could stand as contemporary poetry), compose complex and innovative music, and play the piano with impeccable technique.
All in all, Fiona Apple is a powerhouse of a musician and artist. "When the Pawn..." is simply evidence of this. Three thumbs up!
(And if you like this CD, make sure you also purchase "Extraordinary Machine" - her most accomplished and impressive album yet!)

  When The Pawn...

It is a good album.
I am quite the Fiona Apple fan.

Not up to par with, say, "Tidal", but still a great production.

Definitely worth a listen for those who haven't.

When the Pawn... by Fiona Apple
Review created: 06/08/06

Fiona Apple's sophomore project "When the Pawn..." is a small departure from her first hit release "Tidal." Musically the album mixes her signature piano sounds with a fun selection of pop. Vocally Fiona never ceases to amaze me with her range and purity. The lyrics of this album are less light hearted than her previous or later works. She seems to really lash out at some of her past loves with songs like "Limp," "Fast As You Can," and "Get Gone." I think that this is the most dynamic of all of her works, and it is my personal favorite. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do.

  Very empowering

This is an awesome follow-up to Tidal, possibly even better than her first. If Tidal was sad, then this is mad. For me, at least, it is very empowering.
