When Rose discovers she is pregnant, she decides to leave her husband, running away and never telling him where she is. At St. Elizabeth's, a home for unwed mothers, Rose proceeds to have the baby and raise it with another man. All this time, her first husband never gives up on finding her. Throughout her struggles, Rose is forced to confront her past and question her own faith. Based on the novel by Ann Patchett, the film features strong performances by Ellen Burstyn, Clancy Brown (CARNIVÀLE), and Maggie Gyllenhaal, whose father (Stephen Gyllenhaal) directed the picture.
