A Path Through Suffering by Elisabeth Elliot

Everyone goes through times of testing or trial. When we do we often do one of two things. We either turn to God and embrace him or we turn away in anger because he allowed us to experience more grief (or other trial) than we feel should have been allowable. Very few of us would endure all that Job endured and still say "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him." Elisabeth Elliott is one who has drained the cup of sorrow to the bottom and remained a shining example of God's love and the proper response to suffering.
Jim Elliott is a name recognised by many Christians because he was killed, along with four other missionaries, while trying to reach the Auca Indians for Christ. Mrs. Elliott remarried, years later, but her second husband died of cancer. This was a slow painful death, one that could have turned a lesser Christian's heart away from God. It is not how Mrs. Elliott responded during these times of trial that she writes about. It is the profound insight gained by these experiences that she passes on to the rest of us.
In our worst trial, we can read Mrs. Elliott's words and know that the wisdom she offers comes from one who knows what we are feeling. She is not an arm chair psychologist but one who has been there and experienced the worst. It is not that we will be rid of the pain by understanding the wisdom she offers. Indeed, God has given us this pain for a purpose. To experience the pain and not gain the purpose that God intends would be a double tragedy. By reading this excellent book we may well avert such a tragedy.
The death of five missionaries (many years ago) was a beautiful part of God's plan being worked out on earth. The world will never understand the beauty of that plan. Those who read Mrs. Elliotts beautiful book will come ever so much closer to understanding how God works and will therefore experience a greater understanding of the truth that the prophet Jeremiah wrote (Jer. 29:11)"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end."
We serve a wonderful God, one who is too wise to ever make a mistake and too good to ever be unkind. Thanks be to this author for making this truth understandable. Her work is not just valuable reading. It is a wonderful gift to anyone going through a trial.
