Album Notes During his two-year stint at United Artists Records, George Jones had the good fortune to be paired with Melba Montgomery for several albums. Jones and Montgomery shared an East Texas drawl and a gift for unaffected, emotive singing, and the combination resulted in powerful, affecting recordings. While Jones and Tammy Wynette may have had more hits as a duet team, most hardcore country fans agree that George and Melba's recordings are the best duets Jones ever recorded. PARTY PICKIN' was recorded in 1967, after Jones had moved to Musicor Records. The album includes ten of the pair's duets, including a rerecording of their biggest hit, "We Must Have Been Out of Our Minds." Although Montgomery does not sing as well as she did on the duet's three United Artists albums, she's still plenty good, and there's a convincing argument to be made that every Jones-Montgomery recording is an essential one. This album is worth the price if only for the tracks "Party Pickin'," "Living On Easy Street" and "Long Walk Off A Tall Rock." A definitive collection of Jones and Montgomery duets, called VINTAGE COLLECTION, is available on Capitol.
