Usually, an artist will save live versions and hard-to-find songs for a box set, but Mary Chapin Carpenter has never played by the rules. Ostensibly a "greatest hits" package, PARTY DOLL is a creative collection that's a must-have for any fan. The CD is packed with live versions of some of her most popular songs, recorded at some unique places. For example, the version of her breakthrough hit "Down At the Twist & Shout" is taken from her performance at the 1997 Super Bowl, while a fierce version of "Can't Take Love For Granted" comes from a "Late Show with David Letterman" appearance. Many of the live tracks are acoustic and dramatically reworked, like the hushed, slowed-down rendition of "Quittin' Time." PARTY DOLL also includes songs Carpenter recorded for other projects, including "Grow Old With Me" (from a John Lennon tribute album) and "10,000 Miles" (from the "Fly Away Home" movie soundtrack). Three new songs round out the CD, including the gospel-influenced "Almost Home" and a version of Mick Jagger's "Party Doll." By making nearly every track a collectible, Carpenter turns PARTY DOLL into a unique "event" instead of a run-of-the-mill hits package. Reviews  Country Music LOVE this disc. Recommend it to ANYONE. It has a little of everything....reflective ballads to rockin' tunes. Very introspective. Carpenter shares her personal experiences in a relatable way. Feels like she's telling listener's own stories. Highly recommend to any singer/songwriter fan. The songs range from southern rock to tender ballads and make you feel like kicking up your heels one moment and peacefully relaxing in quiet reflection the next. Some CDs have a few songs that are excellent, some average, and some dismal, but this CD has no songs you would want to skip over. I highly recommend it to anyone. Report this review Tears Tears TearsThis album runs the emotions gamut from high to higher. Quitting Time brings me to tears every time. If only I could sing "Dreamland" to my own children. In my opinion, Chapin Carpenter's song writing and singing abilities far exceed the majority of her colleages. I'm hoping she recovers from her illness and is back on tour again soon. Party Doll& other favorites had a particular song on I wanted and some others that I liked. It was less expensive since it was used, but in great condition. The CD case was not in good condition, but this tends to happen eventually to all my cases anyway. A great way to get CDs that you only want a few songs from inexpensively.
