Parnassus on Wheels by Christopher Morley
This is a wonderful story considered by some to be an American classic. The main character is Roger Mifflin who, (around 1914-15), sells books throughout the countryside out of a converted horse-drawn wagon. He is accompanied by Peg, his horse, and Bock, his wiry old dog. He decides to retire and attempts to sell his wagon and inventory to a well-known author he admires. The author’s sister thinks that if her brother were to buy Parnassus, it would be the ruin of him. So, she decides to purchase it herself. This is the story of her adventure across the countryside in her new business as travelling bookseller under the tutelage of Roger. This book was so successful, that Christopher Morley continues the story of Roger in his book, The Haunted Bookshop (also considered by some to be an American classic). Both books are fun to read and extremely well-written.
