This WWII movie has an all star cast with Charles Boyer, Leslie Caron, Kirk Douglas and Jean-Paul Belmondo, plus several cameos from other actors throughout. It's based on the re-telling of the liberation of Paris and the Nazi's attempt to burn it to the ground, after the invasion of Normandy. This movie would be better if it did not ramble. It becomes a blotchy film at the best of times. I think we expect more from Gore Vidal who did the screenplay along with Francis Ford Coppola. I can only recommend it if you want to see the stars who are in it and the international ones that appear briefly in cameos. Otherwise there are far better movies with this same theme.

Although it is in black and white it is a very good movie with a lot of historiacal fact. The only question you will have after watching the move is " Why don't the French kiss the ground that Americans walk on?" The answer must be that they have a very short memory.

Well made with superb actors about a true historical event and 2 unsung heroes, the Swedish Consul General and Dietrich von Cholitz, the German commander of Greater Paris who, ignoring Hitler's (and the high command's) orders, refused to raze the city.

I purchased this for my dad who is one of the few remaining WWII veterans.
It really focuses on the contributions of the French underground and even shows some actual footage of their efforts and their struggle.
I'd watch it again!
