Album Notes
George Carlin in a 1990 performance, angrier and funnier than ever. Here he takes on subjects as diverse as the idea that broccoli will somehow prevent you from getting cancer; concludes, more in sorrow than in anger, that some people are stupid; and wonders why we don't have a diet salad dressing called 500 Islands. He also imagines things we'll never hear, such as "Honey, let's sell the children, move to Zanzibar, and start taking opium rectally."
As always, however, one of his most important subjects is language, whether it be the so-called "offensive" variety that got him in trouble with the FCC, or the culture's seemingly innocuous yet far more pernicious tendency toward euphemism, as, for instance, when the descriptive "shell shock" eventually morphed into the less honest "battle fatigue."

CLASSIC CARLIN COMEDY: Funny, Edgy, Literate, Explicit!
    Review created: 01/11/08
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

George Carlin's album Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics (1990) is exactly as advertised. His cynical, sarcastic, linguistic comedic style is as angry and funny as ever. Much of the CD is dedicated to challenging political correctness and defying social conventions.

Carlin's observations about the changes in the American language through the use of euphemisms will hit home with anyone who feels that political correctness is out of control in the United States. He does face a challenge with his audience when he attempts to make a case that you can "make a joke about anything." His effort at joking about rape is a little over the top.

The "NOTICE" Carlin includes on the back of the CD's album notes is indicative of the album's tenor: "This recording contains no backmasking or subliminal suggestions. All messages from the Devil are recorded clearly and audibly in straightforward Standard American English." This album is definitely NOT for everyone, not so much because of Carlin's profuse foul language, but because the subject matter will definitely be offensive to many people.
