Movie Description
The romantic films of the 1930s and '40s influenced director Peter Bogdanovich (THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, MASK) in PAPER MOON, a masterpiece influenced by the filmmaking of those periods --a classic comedy drama that resembles the films of John Ford or Sam Wood.

Moses Pray (Ryan O'Neal) is a happy-go-lucky con man traveling throughout the Midwest during the Great Depression, conning widows into buying Bibles. Stopping in a small town for a friend's funeral, he is persuaded to deliver the deceased's precocious 10-year-old daughter, Addie Loggins (Tatum O'Neal, Ryan's real-life daughter), to her aunt's home. The resemblance between Moses and Addie--who never knew her father--is uncanny, and the two are soon acting like father and daughter as they travel the back roads of heartland America. Despite his initial misgivings, Moses is delighted to find that Addie is a boon to business, catching on

quickly and adding her own twists to his favorite cons. Madeline Kahn stars as

Trixie Delight, a ladyfriend Moses meets along the way--a situation that brings out

Addie's possessive side. Bogdanovich convincingly recreates the feel and look of the 1930s with his nostalgic look at life on the open road. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay; both Kahn and the 11-year-old O'Neal were nominated for Best Supporting Actress, which O'Neal won.

11yo Tatum O'Neal's Remains Youngest Recipient Award

In 1973, while filming "Paper Moon," Tatum O'Neal (Who should have been considered the Leading Actress--ask what other female in the film was???) turned 11yo & won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She remains, in the fall of 2008, the youngest recipient of the competitive award. I feel she was cheated out of a Best Actress award. Once you view the film, it's obvious there is no other leading actress. Not even close!

Peter Bogdanovich filmed this masterpiece in B&W so that the characters of the 30's, during the US depression era, didn't appear to be more well than the actual people of the era.

What makes Tatum's performance so remarkable for a child is that she is able to cast cuts into a person's soul with her icey stares. This kid is not a cutesy little girl. In a way, she's a "holy" terror.
Tatum O'Neal's film debut also won her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She turned 11 while shooting the film.

Her real life father, Ryan O'Neal (Moses Pray) has been a former lover of her now deceased mother's, who arrives at the funeral only to find bible-thumping neighbors eager to ship the newly orphaned, Addie Loggins (Tatum) off with him to her only aunt in St. Louis.

Pray's a con man who's game is selling widows bibles he claims their deceased beloved ordered for them before their deaths. Addie falls right into the con game, insisting upon getting more money for the bibles & her own cut of pay out her work. Pray pretends that she's his motherless child for sympathy's sake. Addie is even more slick a con than Pray.

"Paper Moon" was a 4 Oscar nominee. The historical Oscar win belongs deservedly to Tatum O'Neal~
