Paper Mario appeals to all ages.

Paper Mario appeals to all ages with its charm and puzzle solving. There is a fine mix of both puzzle solving, charming characters and events, and witty dialogue.

Please be aware that Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is an RPG (Role Playing Game) and not a standard 2D platformer like the original Mario Bros. games. You play as Mario and must solve some hard problems in the game using Mario's paper abilities.

I recommend this game for chilren to adult ages 6+, as there is quite a bit of written dialogue that must be read. Younger children may be stumped at some of the puzzles in the game and may need some help. Thankfully, the game is fun for all ages - which could turn adult intervention or help into "whoops, I just beat the game for you."

This game is full of charming characters and witty dialogue. The game is also rather long (~40 hours) with constantly changing worlds, enemies, and scenery. Loading times are short and completely unnoticeable. If you have a Gamecube, you owe it to yourself to get Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door!

Paper mario and the thousand year door is a great game to play by yourself or with your kids. The gameplay is very different which makes the game very fun in its own sort of way.Like previous Mario games the, this game is filled with adventure, puzzles, secrets, and some good laughs sometimes! Gameplay in the very beginning takes awhile to get accustomed too, but play it for a couple of hours and you'll find yourself addicted! There is no violence, no gratuitous scenes, which makes it perfect for a child! The price for this game had come down to 19.99 in most stores brand new, which means it would be a great gift to someone. I have always liked the Mario games on account its not the typical shoot the enemy, same scenery, game. New lands are revealed in this, as well as old enemies once again trying to foil Mario in his adventures. I guarentee, if you like Nintendo games, then this game is for you.

The game is filled with wonderful characters and scenarios that only Nintendo could come up with. It's no wonder after playing the game that Gamespot and IGN gave it RPG of the Year.

As fun as Super Mario is, this one is slightly dull.

I love the super mario games, but this one suits very young children the best. It has cute little characters with many hours of gameplay & the game gets harder as you go on, but it cannot be compared to the original Super Mario, as none of the new versions can. It is a good game, but the story line is very bland & this game will quickly get boring for older players.

I Really Want to Say Something About This Game

Well, I got scammed on Half.com / EBay.

I paid for this item. It was billed to my credit card. Then, the seller cancelled his EBay / Half.com account, and dissappeared with my money.

So I never received this game. I attempted to contact the sell, filed a claim, all that. No Reply from seller or EBay / Half.com. They all suck.

But, they have sent me an email, requesting that I rate this game. How retarded. Well, ok - here's your rating, idiots!!

A Decent Title, But Could Be Better
Review created: 09/21/06

I enjoyed this game, but I felt that after a few hours it was becoming too repetative and needed a change in order to keep me playing. I did finish the game, but with qualms. For those who have never seen this game, it's an RPG Mario game...but the graphics are all 2D/3D in such a sense that everything looks like it's made of paper or the characters are paper cut-outs. While many people criticize that because they want the really in-depth, intense, realistic graphics, I find this to be a unique twist that adds some allure to the game. While it is an RPG, the gameplay is slightly tweaked. Yes, you will encounted enemies and execute attacks, all while earning power-ups for you and your band of misfit friends. However, the attacks are different because you've got to hit a combination or series of buttons in order to make your attacks more effective. While this makes the battles a bit more involved for the gamer, rather than just a strategy approach, it does get tedious and sometimes boring if you're doing a lot of fighting or fighting a boss. You'll also be in charge of trying to avoid some of the attacks from enemies as well. Some people might be turned off by the turn based combat system...if you don't like it or don't know if you'll like it, you may just want to avoid this title because of it. Other than that, you're wandering around different worlds, stumbling into different characters and trying to complete some tasks. Some of the tasks are just uncalled for and really boring and the different worlds can be small...not to mention a lot of it is side scrolling. It sounds as if this game is bad, but it's the dynamics of its presentation, story and style of play which keep this game from being something completely terrible. It's a decent game, but needed some improvements to keep this from being a borderline sleeper to a smash.

  Another HIT With Mario Bros.

This is typical Mario Brothers stuff ... but with the added twist of making everything appear Super Thin! Actually this thinness is sort of distracting at first, but you get use to it pretty quickly and of course, get into enjoying the game. As a Mario Brothers fan, I give it 4 Stars!

I bought Paper Mario for my grandson Justin's 8th birthday. He was the one that ask for it and has played it every day sence he recieved it. He does share it with his brothers Jonny (4) and Joshua (9) They all have found a level they can play, and it keeps them happy for hours. I would and have bought more Mario Brothers games for the boys. They seem to be fun without being mean spirited. They love it and so do I.

  Awesome Game to Have FUN!!!!!!!
Review created: 07/23/06

This game is better than the 1st Paper Mario. You now get to go through a RPG with tons of new levels in the coolest of places. You also can get tons of new partners to make your quests funner. The thing I like the most is that this allows you to do optional things for the fun of it. For example you can battle your way through the Pit of 100 Trials to find the hardest person in the game to beat or you can recieve coins or items by solving peoples troubles at the Trouble Center! The cool thing is that those are optional!!! You can take you time get all the recipes and fill up your journal. Note that this took my a good 7-10 hours to do!!!
This is is a fun and exciting game as well as it is time consuming. It takes a good 30-40 hours to beat but it is still worth it!!! This RPG is a really fun game for hours and hours of fun! So what are you waiting for??? Go get this super awesome game!!!!

A lightweight RPG best suited for younger gamers
Review created: 07/04/06
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I played (and completed) the excellent Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64 a few years ago, along with my young son. It was very close to a perfect game: visually spectacular, original, engaging, moderately challenging, and filled with goofy cut scenes. The episode-based play worked perfectly to keep both of us from getting bored or frustrated; it was impossible to go too far down a dead end, or "lose" the game.

I'm happy to say that this sequel is worthy of the original. There is again an elaborate plot and back-story, there are more engaging Mushroom Kingdom characters, and lots more great paper effects. The papery world can get peeled back like Post-It note, torn like a Kleenex, folded like origami, and spring out like the pictures in a pop-up book. The characters have more to say (sometimes more than you want them to say!) The game's designers paid a great deal of attention to user interface and playability, and it really shows.

The Paper Mario games are not terribly difficult. That's a good thing, especially if the game-players in your household are young or less experienced. If you're an adult and at all good at figuring out strategy-based battles, you may rarely lose a fight. This may make the game seem to easy, but in that case there are still plenty of silly cut scenes, animations, mini-games, and side quests to keep you entertained.

This is also the kind of video game that is enjoyable to watch someone else play: the beautiful color palettes, animations, and secret objects are enough to occupy two peoples' attention, so try trading off with your kids and showing off your stylin' moves (and don't bogart that joystick!)

The original Paper Mario game had a few drawbacks. The large number of battles could occasionally become tedious. This game improves on the original in giving you an audience to distract you and cheer for you during fights. The menu of available moves, badges, and items is even more elaborate than in the original, so you can focus on clever strategies. In fact, you have to pay at least some attention to careful use of your party members and special attacks: some enemies are impervious to all standard attacks, and will require cleverness to beat, just as many of the worlds contain areas that will only open to you after you've gained additional special abilities.

One last comment: these games are short. I think I finished the first one in about twenty hours of play, and I did not rush. Twenty hours may sound like a lot, but not when compared to a game like Donkey Kong 64, which might take a player ten times longer. If you are a hardcore gamer, you might want to look elsewhere, but if you have a life outside of video games, and don't have a lot of free time to spare, this is the game for you. You might find yourself, like me, wishing at the end that there were more secrets to uncover and more silly mini-games to play. I have not finished this new Paper Mario, but I've found most of the stars, so it will probably not be long. I'm looking forward to what I expect will be a spectacular ending!

P.S.: Addendum to the above, added after posting the original.

I may be mis-remembering how long it took me to finish the original Paper Mario for the N64; it may have been more like 40 or 50 hours; still, compared to some of the more elaborate platformers, it was a relatively short game. In any event, this game is proving to a bit longer than that.

I've gotten past the thousand-year door, but decided

  Best Buy because of E-bay
Review created: 06/12/06

Paper Mario is a great game for the Gamecube and is an excellent addition to anyones game library. This is especially true because on E-bay you can get it for a somewhat reduced price, and the only thing that I didn't like about this game was the idea of shelling out 50 dollars for it. It is a game that certainly entertains and takes time to master. I certainly didn't know what to expect out of a mario Rpg but this game certainly delivered.

  Great game all around!

If you've enjoyed any of Mario's past appearances, you really ought to give this game a try. It exhibits a level of visual artistry and technical prowess matched or exceeded by few other GameCube games. The game's flat 2D characters and certain other flat 2D elements amid pop-up-book-style 3D backgrounds not only adds to the visual flair, but it also sets up some interesting gameplay.

Fights are turn-based, and involve Mario and his companions taking turns dishing out damage with one or more bad guys. Over the course of the game, Mario will gradually learn a wide variety of jumping and hammer attacks, as well as some other special moves. Attacking is not just a matter of selecting options from a menu, either. Each technique has some sort of control input that's required for you to pull off the technique.

It is quite a long game, weighing in at 30 to 40 hours from start to finish. It's chock-full of optional side quests and secret areas, and also invites you to continue your adventures even after the main storyline reaches its satisfying conclusion.

  It's a fantastic RPG..
Review created: 05/01/08

It's a seriously great game, developed by INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS, who brought ADVANCE WARS and FIRE EMBLEM to Nintendo consoles, it's a strategic explorathon, with lots of character who aid you in your quest.. good for kids who want to get into the RPG zone, or even for adults who still harbour secret desires that they're a stout brooklyn plumber with a handlebar tash.. er.. ok then.. great!! Really hard to find a UK version of this game, so it' may well be needed that you get yourself a freeloader to play the American version, which is quite cheap to obtain, and gives you enough reason to seek out other NTSC gems like this one...

We love this game. I used to play the orginial mario games growing up, and wanted something like that for my boys to play. This is not Mario Land or anything, but I have really enjoyed playing it. And so have my boys. They love Mario! I do miss the old Mario, but the new is really good too.
