I must say, I don't usually watch movies with subtitles... but from the very first few minutes of this haunting, magical film, I was sucked in and didn't even notice them anymore.

If there's a movie to see of the last few years, this one is it.
It has magic, sadness, war, tragedy, tears, suspense and more! Don't let the subtitles scare you off, just make this movie part of your collection. I promise you won't be disappointed by any means.

Another note: If you think this film is more of a childrens film.. it isn't . If you have younger children you might want to watch this before you let them view it , as it has some violent, scary moments in the film.

Language isn't always a barrier in tales like these....

Pan's Labyrinth is a unique tale told by Guillermo Del Toro about a young girl named Ofelia who believes in fairytales. She is swept away with her pregnant mother to the battlefield of Civil war era in Spain to the brutal Captain Vidal. Upon finding an unusual insect, she meets with a Faun. The faun is unsure that she is the princess of the underworld and gives her 3 tasks to complete. The story continues in fantasy as it does in reality. The music is very beautiful and the graphics in this movie are eye-catching but not super flashy, which is a nice break. It's more violent scenes and language is why it is rated R. Thankfully the subtitles do not hinder the progress of the storyline. Here's my summary.

Plot:4/5
Characters: 4/5
Visual Effects: 5/5
Subtitles: 5/5
Music: 5/5

This movie has become a classic in it's own right. It will become timeless in its appeal and morals. If you haven't seen it, it's a worthwhile experience.

  Outstanding effects, delightful story!

Rarely, if ever, do my wife and I enjoy movies with subtitles. This is a definite exception. After watching it three times in the theaters, I can't even imagine enjoying it any other way. Something hauntingly beautiful about watching such a masterful production in a forreign language. Please, don't miss the opportunity to enjoy what should become a timeless classic just because it isn't in English. 5/5 stars!

  Great Fairy Tale
Review created: 02/26/07

I love movies that blur the line between fantasy and reality; Pan's Labyrinth, like others before it, posits that they might exist simultaneously. The film has a wonderful, touching story that runs the gamut of human emotions.

It is my favorite Spanish language film of all time. Moreover, for those of us whose Espanol is no bueno, the subtitles are not distracting, as the dialogue is very simple, and much of the story is told through character action, expression, and setting. Honestly, I have to be in a certain mood to watch a film in a language I don't speak, but this is one I could watch over and over again, with or without knowing what's being said (and the last time I made such a bold statement was with Benigni's "La Vita e Bella" in 1997).

I highly recommend this film, though there are some graphic scenes of violence, so parents might want to pre-screen it before letting the kiddos watch. Nonetheless, top-notch film! I'm glad it got some Oscar recognition.

Rent it. Buy it. Just make sure you see it!

Good visual and one of the best films I have seen
Review created: 03/31/07

I saw Pan's Labyrinth at a screening in Waco and it's everything they're saying it is. Truly Del Toro's best. He gave a Q&A and said that it's the sister piece to Devil's Backbone, and it really is. If you enjoyed that, you'll love this. Without giving away the story, which unfolds wonderfully, it's the tale of a girl who lives in a land of fairy tales while the Franco regime is fighting the last rebels in the hills. It counterpoints the political upheaval and coming fascism with her idealism, scene by scene just as Backbone did. STUNNING visual effects and production design with layers upon layers of details, I found a tad reminiscent of the best parts of Hellboy but with far more heart. Beautiful and poignant – highly recommended. Don’t wait for the DVD. Go see it on a big screen wherever you can and here’s hoping it gets wide release. I’m definitely renting it when it comes out, but I’ll probably go see it again too.

This is an incredible film if you enjoy fantasy and don't mind the subtitles. Movies with similar story lines/themes have been made countless times before but the acting (for the most part) and special effects are nothing short of spectacular. I, for one, think that it definitely lived up to the hype.

Good movie, if you like to read sub-titles!

I usually avoid foreign films, but this time i fell prey to clever advertising. The movie trailer shown on television included a narrarator, but no actual dialogue. Until i started watching the movie, i didnt know it was all in Spanish.

Nonetheless, it is a good movie!

This is one of the best movies I have seen. It deserved more awards than it won. The acting is perfect and the graphics are awsome. I had to buy the special addition so that I could have all of the special features. This is definetly a movie that I could watch over and over again. The subtitles are great also you are not spending all of your time reading you actually get to watch the movie and the sentences are not just thrown together like in some forgien dvds. If you love this movie you should also try another film called "Mirrormask."

I didn't really hear to much about this movie before it came out so when I rented it I was quickly turned off by the subtitles but having already spent my money on it I had to atleast give it a chance. I fell in love with it quickly. It seemed almost memeriable. Like a child hood tale I was told long ago and forgot. If your not into reading its a clear no buy but if you don't mind subtitles and want stong images that stick in your mind give it a try.

One of the best movies of the century
Review created: 10/04/07

This movie definitly has it's unpleasant moments but is so visually attractive that it seems incidental to the story being told. The truth is, if it weren't for those unpleasant moments, the rest of the story would be nothing. The contrast of the promise of the labryinth for the young girl at the center of the story to the violence of her life had a profound effect on this viewer. Guillermo del Toro has done his usual spectacular job. Doug Jones as Pan and the man with eyes in his hands is marvelous. His graceful movements give meaning to the characters. Ivana Baquero, the young girl is someone I am sure we will see much more of in the future. Great movie.

Brilliant film. Don't be put off by the fact that there are subtitles; they are hardly noticeable amid the suspense and drama. Intense!

I was rather disappointed in the movie. Although reviews were great, it is nothing special as there are hundreds of movies like this. Given a choice, i would rather rent it than buy a DVD.

Pan's Labyrinth, NOT just another fairy tale -
Review created: 06/03/09
by:

I am partial to subtitles, but this is one movie that is definately worth it. Don't let the name fool you....THIS IS NOT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM A CHILD'S MOVIE! It takes and twists a bit of history with a bit of folklore and stirs it up with the macabre. With a recipe like that, it couldn't go wrong. It is definately an adult fairy tale. Everytime I see it, I discover yet another level or view not noticed before. There is so much, you can't get it all in just one or two viewings. Definately worth every penny and your time.

does'nt matter if you know the language or not, this story is so well produced that you can follow the story just by the actions. this movie really does a great job of bringing you into the life of a war torn family. and allows you to see the pain that a young child feels from the loss and ravages of war. while entertaining you with the imiges of the young girls imagination that she uses to cope with her environment.

Excellent movie for young and old
Review created: 02/19/09

Pan's Labyrinth was a joy to watch. It was the perfect blending of the ugly realities of war/evil men with the beauty and magic of the mythical world. Ofelia was thrown into a bad situation when her mother was remarried to a cruel war monger. She found "another" world that she could retreat into where she was the princess with a mission to set the world at balance again. Filled with graphics beyond imagination, this movie weaves in and out of the backdrop of war torn Spain into a fantastical world filled with strange creatures with wings, horns and magical powers. It is not without its scary moments for very young movie goers, be forewarned. However, the movie flowed with great intensity and intellectually stimulated the imaginations of those who saw it. The conversations afterwards are very interesting indeed. This movie will be one of the great classics.

  A Beautiful Movie
Review created: 01/07/09

Visually amazing, reminds me of why I always loved movies like Labyrinth and the Dark Crystal. Special effects without too much over the top cartoon animation, makes it seem more realistic, that's what I respect about Guillermo Del Toro's work. Buy beyond that, a heartbreaking and wonderfully told story to boot. Even forgot I was reading subtitles the whole time.

Spanish vocals only? You've GOT to be kidding!

Sheesh! What the heck do I want a movie where the vocal track is ONLY in Spanish for? Why isn't this noted BOLDLY on the front of the disk cover where people can see this? Watch a movie and read the subtitles? Come on! How lame is that? You can't WATCH the movie when you are trying to read the darn subtitles. Whoever pulled this underhanded stunt should be hauled out back to the woodshed and beaten soundly with a two-by-four.

I feel like I've been raped....

  Pan's Labyrinth is Awesome
Review created: 12/10/08

If you're unfamiliar with, or maybe heard a little bit about this movie, it is best to read a few reviews before making this purchase. Pan's Labyrinth is a very excellent, twisted, creative story and directed extremely well. The story takes place in the the late 30s in Spain, and the entire movie is in Spanish w/ English subtitles, of course. At first you may think it to be a children's movie, but it becomes very contraversial toward the end. Be of strong mind when watching this movie, and no it is not for kids. Overall, Pan's Labyrinth is great, and apparently others share the same opinion for the movie won several Academy Awards. One thing is for sure, Pan's Labyrinth will etch itself into your memory

Excellent movie. It's visually stunning while thematically disturbing and touching. The entire movie is in Spanish, which only adds to the lyricism and beauty. If you are a big fan of movies, you should not pass this one up!
