Movie Description
Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, PAN'S LABYRINTH is a thrilling, violent fairy tale set in post-Civil War Spain. Ivana Baquero stars as Ofelia, a young girl who moves with her mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil), into the home of Captain Vidal (Sergi López), in an abandoned mill in the middle of dark, dangerous woods. Vidal is leading his team of soldiers against resistance fighters--and he will do whatever is necessary to kill every last one of them. As Vidal bosses around the pregnant Carmen, a flying creature leads Ofelia through a garden labyrinth and into an underground cave ruled by Pan (HELLBOY's Doug Jones), who believes that Ofelia might be the lost princess of this strange yet magical place. To prove she is royalty, Ofelia must complete three tasks, each more difficult and terrifying than the previous one. Meanwhile, Vidal is becoming more and more paranoid, torturing and murdering seemingly at will. Del Toro (THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, HELLBOY, CRONOS) creates a marvelous battle between good and evil, between heroes and villains, in both the real world aboveground and the mystical land below. Baquero gives a compelling performance as the terrorized Ofelia, who is befriended by Mercedes (Maribel Verdú), a woman who harbors some secrets of her own. Stellar production design, superb special effects, and a stirring score by Javier Navarrete add to the scary fun. Selected as the closing-night entry in the 2006 New York Film Festival, PAN'S LABYRINTH is a captivating story that is not for the squeamish.

I must say, I don't usually watch movies with subtitles... but from the very first few minutes of this haunting, magical film, I was sucked in and didn't even notice them anymore.

If there's a movie to see of the last few years, this one is it.
It has magic, sadness, war, tragedy, tears, suspense and more! Don't let the subtitles scare you off, just make this movie part of your collection. I promise you won't be disappointed by any means.

Another note: If you think this film is more of a childrens film.. it isn't . If you have younger children you might want to watch this before you let them view it , as it has some violent, scary moments in the film.

Language isn't always a barrier in tales like these....

Pan's Labyrinth is a unique tale told by Guillermo Del Toro about a young girl named Ofelia who believes in fairytales. She is swept away with her pregnant mother to the battlefield of Civil war era in Spain to the brutal Captain Vidal. Upon finding an unusual insect, she meets with a Faun. The faun is unsure that she is the princess of the underworld and gives her 3 tasks to complete. The story continues in fantasy as it does in reality. The music is very beautiful and the graphics in this movie are eye-catching but not super flashy, which is a nice break. It's more violent scenes and language is why it is rated R. Thankfully the subtitles do not hinder the progress of the storyline. Here's my summary.

    Plot:4/5
    Characters: 4/5
    Visual Effects: 5/5
    Subtitles: 5/5
    Music: 5/5

This movie has become a classic in it's own right. It will become timeless in its appeal and morals. If you haven't seen it, it's a worthwhile experience.
