My PV-SD4090 is +3 years old and still Kicking
Review created: 09/26/05

Greetings,
I purchased my camera new as a low-cost alternative to the Sony Disc cameras of the day. It has the Super-Disk with plenty of storage, and you can also use floppies as an alternative. The higher resolution images are a decent 250K .jpg average size. And if a guest/friend wanted a copy of a pic . . . just hand it to them on a floppy. I've taken more than 5000 pics thus far and the original battery is just now short-cycling. I feel my original $250 was well spent.

OK, the cons. This camera is 'Man Size' to say the least. It is slow to 'wake-up' and takes around 5-seconds to store a pic (less for lower-res pics, but why would you do that).

I'll finish with some more pros. It can use a floppy which were cheap until recently. The battery lasts until you are tired of taking pictures. The camera functions as a spare drive thru any USB port. Takes simple Quick-Time movies. Has some very useful manual overides. And lastly, has a viewer that you don't need a magnifier to watch. Did I mention it also has an A/V output port?

Thank You for the opportunity,
Mr. Bill

  Great for Ebay Beginners

An older model basic camera , great for Ebay , uses regular floppy's to record on .
Also has USB direct hook-up .

Just take some pictures , pop out the floppy , put it in your computer A-drive ,
choose a photo program , open file A-drive , select file , select DCIM ,

select 100_pana , select picture number (or thumbnail upper right) ,

open picture , enhance / improve picture with photo program , save picture in a file you'll remember , (I have a "Ebay Stuff" file) .

I use this camera instead of my $1000 Nikon for Ebay Pictures it's great !!!

It takes the least amount of learning. I use it mostly for Ebay, but also make personalized cards for people, with their photo. I also use it to document diassembly sequences for cars, bikes, etc. Then I can see how it looked before I went into it. It is handy and complete. Why they don't make a more modern one with a CD - ? IT MUST BE ON THE EJECT THE DISK! 90% OF HEM HAVE THAT BROKEN FIRST. I carry one in my car in case I come upon an accident or something I just have to get a picture of! I've sold those phot's for as much as $50. I keep one just for a spare. They are just plain good!

  Tough Enuf

Kinda bulky, but built like a tank. I've had mine for about 7 years now and I call it "Old Faithfull" and usually keep it in my truck with an AC charger. I don't think I would treat a more modern digital out in the elements like that on a continual basis, but the PV-SD4090 is tough enough to handle it.

  Panasonic SD-4090 1.3 MP Camera

Bought an SD-4090 new about 4 years ago & paid almost $500. Recently, paid just a small fraction of that for a used one. No problems with the first which is still using the original battery, but I wanted to get all the spare equipment. This camera is large and outdated by today's standards, but is very simple to use and with take an excellent picture at the 1.3 fine setting while fitting 11 shots on a floppy or 976 on a super disk. Using 125K or less of storage, the pictures email in a flash and even make acceptable notebook paper size prints. Have never felt the need to use the super fine or the normal picture setting. Does not have an optical view finder, but most of today's digital cameras also do not have that feature.

Panasonic PV-SD4090 is an excellent choice for little $

These cameras were prices around $900.00 at the peak of their existence. Now that they are almost a decade old and disks obsolete, they seem worthless. However, if you can get your hands on one of these models, you will be glad you did. I own 3 (one for parts). This camera takes clear crisp beautiful professional photos. Yes it is a little slow to write, and the hard drive is noisy, but for Ebay purposes you can't go wrong. They are perfect for still shots. These models are still all over the place and they are cheap! They were originally compatible with Windows ME, but they can be used with XP (Vista, not sure). I have another digital camera that is new and is 6x the megapixel. The SD4090 still blows it out of the water. If you want a great camera for Ebay pictures, pick one up! It is an impressive quality camera.

I purchased this model new six maybe seven years ago and I have since owned 3 other digital cameras, all broken. I am the first to admit that I am hard on electronics but I have not had a single issue with my PV-SD4090. I am a pastry chef and I often use a camera in the kitchen while creating, documenting and or creating pictorials. This camera has been great.

I was pleased to get this camera although an older one I had the identical model, but without a charger and only one battery, so this one was complete including instruction manual, for less than the price for a charger.

  great camera
Review created: 06/14/08

the panasonic pv-sd4090 has always been my favorite non-film camera. takes great pix and SUPER close ups. i was glad to find a replacment for a reasonable price. the fact that it takes pix to a floppy means i can d/l them anytime i want on any computer and dont need special software to do it or use the camera for a drive and wear it out so fast. doesnt match a 33mm lol but what does?

I was very impressed with the camara. When I recieved it the features on it are great. It makes it convient to have a camara that you don't have to keep replacing it with new film. Also it came equipped with audio so I can record voices to remember people by. My son thought it was the best christmas present ever. For the great camara it responsibly priced.

Panasonic PalmCam everyone should have one of these

I love the way the camera holds a 3.5 disc, the pictures are fantastic. It also has a program to follow and make it possible to take more pictures per disc, it has a zoom lens that is fantastic
the only thing I dislike about it is the camera gets a bit heavy especially if you have to carry it very far, it is not compact for certain but all the features make up for it

  PALM CAM REVIEW

I BOUGHT THIS CAMERA FOR USE IN COSTRUCTING MY WEBSITE.
I WORK IN AN INDUSTRIAL SETTING AND FOUND THAT THE PV-SD4090 HAS A DESIGN THAT WOULD BE ABLE TO SURVIVE HARSH ENVIRONMENTS. ALSO, I HAVE RATHER LARGE HANDS AND FIND THAT MANY NEW MODELS OF CAMERA ARE VERY HARD FOR ME TO OPERATE BECAUSE OF THEIR MINIATURE SIZE. THE PV-SD4090 HAS A LARGE HANDGRIP, BUTTONS AND VIEWING AREA. I ALSO LIKE THE ZOOM LENSE BECAUSE IT IS COMPACT AND DOES NOT EXERCISE IN AND OUT EVERY TIME YOU TURN THE CAMERA ON AND OFF AS I HAVE EXPERIENCED WITH OTHER CAMERA DESIGNS IT ALSO HAS A VERY NICE BUILT IN LENSE COVER THAT IS SIMPLE TO OPERATE. THE PV-SD4090 HAS A MENU THAT IS EASY TO NAVIGATE. THE PV-SD4090 IS NOT AS FAST AT START UP, PICTURE TAKING AND DOWNLOADING TO THE PC AS A MORE MODERN CAMERA, BUT TIME IS NOT CRITICAL TO MY USE OF THE CAMERA. OVERAL I AM PLEASED WITH THE CAMERA, IT IS JUST WHAT I NEEDED TO GET MY WEBSITE OFF THE GROUND.
