Easy to use, yet plenty of advanced features for more knowledgeable photographers. Lightweight, love the superzoom. Well worth the money if you pay $300 or less for it, since it retails for $400.

An excellent camera with extreme zoom (16.5 X possible)

I was looking for a good buy in an extended zoom camera on ebay, and I did a lot of research on the leading brands for point-and-shoot extended zooms. I looked at Olympus (longest zooms), Fuji, Kodak, and finally noticed the Panasonic Lumix camera showing up as comparison standards in many of the tests.

Reviews on the Panasonics were quite good, and seemed to avoid the inevitable "except for" flaws that showed up in the other reviews.

The DMC-F27 is an out of production camera, dating from 2006 and carried into 2007. It's been superceded by the FZ8 with another megapixel of resolution, but little else of significant improvement. The FZ7 showed up as a new item on ebay, and I purchased at a good price, less that what I would pay retail for the bottom of line extended zooms.

I find the Panasonic controls are well-located and intuitive. It takes excellent pictures, is lightning fast to focus, and fast on turnaround; one of the reasons for my purchase was fast recycling between shots in comparison to many of the other cameras.

I have yet to really test it, though I have taken pictures under most normal situations and been happy. Shots are sharp and appear sharp corner to corner (though most of these camera show some softness in corners when you delve deeply into them; certainly fine for normal viewing.

I was pleased to find that the 12X zoom is actually more when you run with a lower resolution setting. I see no reason to take huge pictures suitable for printing off into almost posters when you are likely only going for 8 X 10 if not smaller and the resolution for that is fine. I set my shots for the 3m setting, yielding me shots 2048 X 1536, and the zoom takes the centre out of a larger resolution and gives what really is a 16.5 power zoom at that resolution, without resorting to digital zoom! This is almost to the Olympus 18X zoom, and that much of an extension is difficult for holding solid in any event.

The lens extends out relatively far for zoom, but certainly less than the Pinoccio-like extension of some other cameras. It's equipped with a Leica lens, for many decades known for being one of the world's finest companies for lenses and cameras.

The only things I don't like are things I have to learn... unless it has a setting I haven't located yet, the flash has to be opened manually (button on top left) to have the flash on; you tend to forget this and it will take the picture without flash, many times OK for exposure, but soft because of slow shutter speed. Secondly, when you forget the lens cap in turning the camera on, it gives beeps and a message to this effect, and you have to tap the right arrow to clear this (after removing the cap). The right arrow is a little more tricky to quickly find than just tapping the joystick (a special feature on this camera for moving through menus and reviewing pictures), or just half-pushing the shutter--- these would have been easier things to clear the lens cap warning feature.

I'm only a few weeks into ownership, but at this point extremely pleased with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7.

--
Update after a year of owning... still very pleased with the camera. Pictures are excellent. Took many shots recently of para surfers in the DR, fast action as they swept past, and the focusing ability was excellent on these difficult targets. I sometimes detect a slight smearing of the colors, particularly red(effect of angles of refraction), at extreme zoom range (16.5

Panasonic LUMIX DMC FZ7 An Outstanding Camera
Review created: 06/09/08(updated 03/31/09)

This camera is reasonably priced when bought used on ebay. It's 12x zoom operates smooth as silk. There is very little shutter lag and it operates well in most low light situations. I bought one on eBay for my Son and liked it so well I bought a second camera for myself. The mega optical image stabilization is one of the best systems on the market thus minimizing picture blur caused by moving the camera during shooting. It is available in both silver and black camera bodies. Many prefer black however the silver is very classy looking. I love this camera as it is easy to use and can be operated manually like my old SLR. The battery capacity is excellent and the battery charger shuts off when full charge is obtained.

The only negative I am aware of is Panasonic's repair shop fees are high. I have not had any problems with my Lumix DMC FZ7 cameras. Also I have been able to purchase Square Trade Warranties for extra protection.

I am sold on LUMIX Cameras. Also I purchased a LUMIX DMC TZ1 camera which works fantastic and was the first design offering folded optics.

Thank you,

  Big megapixels or quaility lens?
Review created: 12/20/07

The panasonic FZ 7 has the Renowned leica lens and has 6 mp. I see so many people choosing a camera based on how many megapixels it has. I wonder how many poster size pitures they are planning to print. Most people don't print beyond 8x10 and a 2 megapixel camera with a quality lens [Olympus UZ 2100] can make beautiful 8x10s. The FZ 7 has 12x optical and that equals a 432mm in 35 MM lens. Within this range you can expect quality pictures. Especially at the lower 80 and 100 ISO settings. Going into the combined digital you will loose some quality but you can get pictures unatainable with most cameras. Drop down to 3mp and you can zomm to 66x. I will give you an example of this. From my house in the country I told my nephew to look at the house on the horizon. He said it looks to be grey or maybe blue then I zoomed to 66x and took a picture. Then I said see that ford pickup in the driveway. He could not believe it could capture what the naked eye could'nt see. He went home got on ebay and bought one. Another example was at a concert in the cheap seats. I dropped down to 3 megapixels and was able to get some good closeups not great but good. But considering no one else could get any from that range in low light it was pretty impressive. This may not be the perfect camera but it is the best I have owned sense my Olympus UZ 2100. For outdoor pics this camera does great. Indoor it is good but flash does not carry far so further pictures tend to be on the darker side. The fact that I can get pictures that most cameras can't and it doe's the things most important to me. I rate it excellent for the price. I will always choose quality over the number of megapixels. Hope this helps.

  HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

The DMC-FZ7 is the perfect camera for the right price. I bought mine back in October from another online retailer and have loved it ever since. The main reason I bought it was for the 12x optical zoom because I wanted a camera that would take some great action college football shots. Even though the camera is only 6 mp, this is most often more than enough for the average photographer. It is very simple to use and even has a simple mode so you can point and shoot. This camera has served me well and Panasonic has continued to produce for me as I also own a dual deck DVD recorder made by them. Way to go Panasonic!

  Excellent Overall, Great Results

I love the camera, zoom is excellent. Tons of different scenes allow you to make sure that the camera knows as much or more than you about the subject of your photo. When using the higher end of the zoom; pictures can blur without the use of a tripod. Overall I am completely satisfied with the camera and the pictures that it produces and would recommend to anyone.

I like everything about it
the big fuzz about noise on higher ISO is not really
a problem just use the flash when it's dark
I really like the super fast shutter speed
shot per shot and the mega stabilization (OIS)
it can focus on the subject in a blink
and if you buy it on ebay you know you'll get it
for half the price of retail
I love it!

Panasonic DMC-FZ7 6 Megapixel Feature laden camera

This is one of the best digital camersa's made. Ideal for sports and action photography. The scene modes covers just about every concievable situation that you could be faced with and the full manual mode covers everything else. The 12X Leica designed zoom lense allows you to move in close without moving for those intimate shots and the 6.0 MB resolution will reveal beautiful 14x19 enlargements. This camera competes with the best camcorder's for movie making. Quality is unbelievable. The only down side to this camera is its small memory card capacity. With its 2MB limit your movies are limited to 22 minutes and that is not acceptable. I would have rated this camera excellent if not for the memory card issue.

  Great Camera for the Money!

For the money this is the best Point and shoot you can buy. It has a sports mode that lets you capture the moment. The 12XZoom is fabulous for bringing in your picture. It is easy to use, has a rechargeble battery that charges quickly. I bought mine after seeing the pictures a friend had taken on a camping trip, we saw a herd of elk in a meadow, I took pictures with my "other" camera and you couldn't tell they were elk. He took pictures that zoomed them right in and you could tell they WERE elk. That is when I was sold. You know how you get home and you look at your pictures and say "why did I take that picture?" It's something far away that you cannot tell. Great Buy, Easy to use, Lots of Modes to play with you can point and shoot or you can manual do everything you want. I LOVE THIS CAMERA!

  excellent light weight camera
Review created: 02/19/08

This is a fine camera, light, small, great zoom and stabilization. Battery life is also good.

The negatives would be the manual focus is a bit tricky to master and the small size leaves your pinky finger with no room. The other negative was the high ISO setting is a bit obtuse as you have to go to scene mode to engage it.

Lens caps seem to get lost as well.
The light weight makes it a bit unstable at long zooms. Michelle Ress USA

As a Leica user for sixty years, I waited patiently for Leitz to come out with an affordable digital. I didn't see it, so I bougdht the Lumix F27. The lens is on a par with any of my Leica lenses. A fantastic little camera. And a very affordable price. I can't say enough about it.

  Panasonic DMC-FZ7 Camera
Review created: 12/17/07

2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

After deciding not to buy the expensive digital SLR's available for $500+ without lenses, I decided to look into higher zoom point & shoot digital cameras like this Panasonic. This camera makes this amateur look good. I have, in good lighting, caught incredible stop action photographs at soccer and lacrosse matches includng lacrosse balls in flight. It is as automatic and simple as you want it to be or as manual when you create that perfect image. I am still learning the manual features to adjust focal length, apperature and exposure settings. This is a great entry level camera that will grow with photographers as they progress. Purchase a 1, 2, or 4 GB storage card and a spare battery and enjoy. I did/am!!!

This camera covers everything far away with its 12x optical zoom.I was plesantly suprised that you can take up close shots 1&1/2 inches away.
Also, this camera smaller size and light weight are a plus when you don't want to carry a much heavier DLSR.I highly recommend this camera.

Spectacular control for the price. Great image processor and a lens that is hard to beat...especially at the price. I use this camera primarily when I want to travel light (normally I use a Nikon D80)...this camera meets all my needs when I want a great image without carrying all my usual gear.

I love this camera. When I got this camera it was very easy to figure out how to use it and what all of the buttons were for even though it didnt come with pamphlet. The picture quality of this camera is excellent. If you want clear great quality pictures than this is a camera for you. I was very happy with this purchase and would buy another camera just like this one if the one I just bought were to get broken. My husband and I constantly fight over the camera now.
