This would have a 5 star rating if it was not for the two major problems.
This system has been discontinued and is only available used, refurbished, or new (old stock) if you are extremely lucky.
The KX-TG4000b 4 line base unit system with built in voice mail and capability to handle up to eight 4-line cordless handsets KX-TGA400b or cordless desk sets KX-TGA420b. You can also use the 2-line cordless handset KX-TGA200b but would be limited to the first two phone lines.
The system is easy to install and program. A normal phone system requires a separate wire going from the base to each telephone. This system is completely cordless and you only need to wire up your incoming phone lines to the back of the base unit. The range of the cordless handsets is average to better than average. Also, voice mail setup can be very tricky in a standard phone system, sometimes impossible for the end user to do alone. This system does not have all the fancy options other voice mail system may have but the price for the entire system with phones is less than a typical voice mail system on a hard wired phone system.
HOWEVER, there are two major flaws with the telephones. First: The keypad! With a failure rate of 100% and an average life of 6-18 months depending on usage, the keypad contacts were designed too small!! The contacts barely make contact when new and any tiny bit of dirt, gunk or buildup makes the number buttons extremely hard or impossible to use. To make matters worse, the rubber keypads seep an oily substance that quickly gums up the already fragile buttons. The harder you push, the more oil is forced out. Many rubber keypads do this but you would not notice if the contacts were of the appropriate size.
Second: Choppy transmit. The RF (radio frequency) module is easily knocked out of alignment. This effects the transmit quality but not what you hear when using the phone. It starts out with the other party not hearing you well, sounding like a cheap cordless phone too far away from the base. The problem quickly worsens and soon your callers can't understand you at all. Worse, you loose the link to the base unit, calls are disconnected or your phone just does not ring in the first place. The problem also can occur in the base unit RF module but this effects what you hear in all the cordless handsets and is much easier for you to detect when using any cordless phone on the system.
We needed another cordless phone for our office. This phone was just exactly as it was listed. It worked with our system. I had one question after receiving the phone and received an immediate response. This was a great buying experience.
I really like my headset. It makes so i can answer 2 phones with 1 headset. The disadvantage is, I don't know if it's my office phone or my cell phone without looking, but for me, that doesn't normally matter.
The whole experience with the seller and ebay had to be the worse experience in purchasing a product. The product I purchased does not work (the seller advertising said it would)and when I asked for a refund she refused and ebay did nothing to back me up. Don't ever buy from my seller and I encourage you to not do any shopping on ebay!
OOPS.......sorry this took me so long, but I actually thought I had written a review...my mistake. I was very pleased with the product and service provided by this vendor! Thank goodness there is an ebay to help consumers with 'hard to find' items.
I bought the KX TGA400B Cordless Expansion Handset a few weeks ago and was in need for an existing KX TG-4000B Base unit currently in operation at a small business office. Two handsets are existing and this will be the added one. The number of features available on this phone is what is attractive and very reliable. I've had this in service for over 2 years with daily operation of receiving/sending calls of more than 30 per day without any downtime in phone functionality. Four persons in our office with 3 lines can rely on these phones. Overall, I'd recommend the phone and the phone system if you're needing reliability and value priced in commercial grade equipment.
Seller was very understanding concerning a problem I had with pay pal. When the problem was resolved seller set the phone ASAP. Great doing business with you.
A great 4 line cordless phone. Very durable. The phone has good range too. The phone will go at least 100 feet from the base through walls. There is one little hitch. The #1 fails on these phones. That's ok, replacement keypads are cheap. You can find them on ebay. One word of caution. Don't buy the keypad from the guy in New Hampshire. His add is misleading and all he sends you is a membrane he claims is a "keypad." It doesn't work either. You actually have to have the rubber keypad to make the repair. Buy from the guy in California. You get the rubber keypad and the membrane (which usually doesn't fail) for 20 cents more than just the membrane the NH guy sells.
This phone has great reception and features, along with good battery life between charges. One fault with it is no mute button for use while on a conference call. You must use a muting headset to achieve this. Another fault is in a 10 digit dialing world, you must edit the number if dialing from the caller id log. Other Panasonic systems have allowed you to load a area code default to avoid having a 1 in front of the number. I bought this to finish out my system and be able to intercom between different rooms in the house. One major problem that plages this phone is the 1 key goes bad. Fortunately a rebuild kit is available to fix this.
I bought this phone because we have the system for our office. It is very easy to add phones as we grow. We have the base and four cordless handsets. This is one phone that Panasonic would do well to manufacture again. So far getting more phones and service has not been difficult. The key pad needs to be replaced after a lot of use as #1 wears out. The phone has all kinds of features and handles business needs easily.
We have had these phones in the office I work in for about 5 years now, the button failure has been the only problem we have had. Every phone on our system we have has had this problem. the contacts are very small, the button repair kit consists of a new button pad (which is not the problem but freshens up the phone and now we can see the numbers.) the main item is the button membrain that is put over the circuit board after you clean all the icky junk off the board, Very easy to do with the included video from the sellers ad, I did all 4 phones in the office and they work like new. I would highly recomend this repair. The phone system eworks great in our office, the range on the phones seems fine, I can go to the bathroom down the hall and still talk on the phone with good reception. I don't know if I would buy this system however due to the high cost of replacement phones, 300 bucks seems very high for 1 refurbished phone, I can only guess what the whole system would cost, but this may be due to them being discontinued. We are very happy with our purchase and our phones work great now
As another person put it, I have had this phone system for 18 months and have gone through two handsets (i.e. needed to send in for repair because of the keypads going. Also, the handset does lose transmission frequently as it goes out of alignment. If you buy, buy an extra handset for when yours is guaranteed to be down due to sending it in for repair!
GREAT PACKING, AVG DELIVERY TIME, WORKS GREAT, EAR SOUND IS DIFFERENT THAN BEFORE, SOUNDS TINY VOICE. OVERALL GREAT SERVICE, DECENT PRICE AND REALIABLE
I love this product. Instead of having to get a whole new handset for the system I have. I purchased this peice and was able to fix the phones myself, saving me a lot of money!
I love the versatility of this phone and its priced just right. I would say this is a good choice for a small office with a small budget. You can't go wrong.
Followed the instructions and the process of replacing the keypad buttons is very easy and what a difference it makes over the old pad that required several attempts to push several of the numbers. Phone feels brand new!! Well worth the purchase.....fast & prompt service too! -David
The Panasonic 2-Line and 4-Line systems aren't perfect, but there is nothing else on the market that I've found that compares. Essentially, for $200-300 you can buy the base unit (on eBay, for example) and end up with a 4-line PBX with voicemail. That's simply not possible at that price for a keyswitch or PBX. It's also very simple to install and program. The kicker for our company was that we also didn't have to rewire Cat-3 all over the place, because the handsets are all wireless.
The handsets themselves are large enough that you don't feel you're using a cell phone. The belt clips work, and you can plug in any standard inexpensive headset. Both the phone and the base station remember dozens of calls, report caller ID, and have excellent functionality.
A lot of users have commented on problems with the keypads. Frankly, we had 14 in use and never had a keypad fail in almost 3 years. That being said, we did replace the keypads before selling them all (we switched to VOIP), at a cost of about $9 apiece, which seems reasonable as the used handsets regularly sell in the $100-140 range.
Unless you switch to a VOIP-based PBX (such as Packet-8, which is what we use), I think the second-best (and less expensive) option is the Panasonic system -- particularly for small offices with 2 to 8 employees.
Garbage. There is the next appropriate word. Beware as all unfortunate users of this piece of JUNK have unhappily found out....the 1 key on these lasts about 6 months. That is it. I would strongly suggest to NOT buy one used.
