I upgraded to the Treo 650 from the LG VX6000 camera phone and I absolutely love the Treo. I wanted a good quality phone and a Palm Pilot and I got both in one product. I opted for the 650 instead of the 700 because of price and the Palm OS rather than Windows. Not much of a Windows fan :(

Pros: the Treo Palm functions are all the same as a normal PDA. The phone functions include an easy-to-use contact list, large on-screen numbers for dialing, speed dials, and call logs for everything. The camera is good quality and the built-in memory holds more than enough pics. I expanded the memory when I put in an external 2GB SD card for mp3's and more pictures. Although I was hesitant to buy the phone because of the small buttons, I have found them quite easy to use since they are arranged liek a normal keyboard. I was pretty good at typing text messages using Smart Text but I have quickly adapted to using the keyboard on the phone.

Cons: Obviously the size is a little heftier than your normal flip phone or Razor but not as annoying as I thought it would be. I use a bluetooth headset so I almost never put the phone up to my ear. The screen is very big for a phone so you need to make sure you put on a screen protector. The SD card is spring loaded so it pops out in my pocket sometimes. You don't really want to lose a 2GB SD card so be careful :(

Overall, any cons are minor compared to the advantages that this sleek phone/PDA offers. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in investing a little in an upgrad.

  Memory card ejection, OH NO!
Review created: 12/04/05

I love my TREO 650, BUT...

The SD card slot lock-in mechanism is spring loaded and when subjected to a jolt, can eject your memory card!

This has happened to me 3 times. Twice I did not notice the ejection and lost 1GB cards! OUCH! That hurts the wallet. Now, I have a funky, grey duct tape fix in place that also covers the IR port, eliminating that functionality for me. Not a great deal, but better than having yet another card loss!

There should be a design fix for this, such as a lock that slides over the top of the card from the right of the slot.

I have also had problems with spontaneous reboots of the phone, but that's another story.

If you are seriously considering an all-in-one, this is the way to go.
At first glance the keys seem very small and difficult to type with. If I was doing all of my texting or e-mailing from the phone it would be, however, it doesn't pose that big of a problem even with chubby fingers. It is very lightweight for an all-in-one and doesn't bother me even on 40 minute conversations. The central nav bar is better than previous cell phones I've had and the stylus puts to rest any frustration for surfing the net with a nav bar alone. I haven't tried a bluetooth wireless yet but birthday and Christmas are coming. I keep it charged during the day and have purchased a seperate charger for the car. (I travel every other week) I would say I am a moderate to heavy phone user and it will easily go two whole days before having to charge. The large diplay beats the pants off any cell phone and the built in camera is ok for fun use. When taking a picture the subject needs to be well lit although the contrast adjusts on its own. The cam corder feature makes jumpy footage but it's still fine for fun use. If you want nice digital pictures, go buy a nice digital camera. This is my first all-in-one and I saved my money to get it. I don't regret the purchase and would welcome any questions for those serious about a similar purchase. I paid $200+ with Sprint PCS (the only way to go) One more thing, Sprint offers MobiTV (streaming TV on your phone) very cool $10 a month! Awesome

  Palm's Treo 650 Is A Great PDA / Phone / MP3 Device
Review created: 08/13/06
by:
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

The Treo 650 is a great converged PDA + Cell Phone + MP3 player solution! Not only is the Treo 650 an excellent PDA, it has features that make it a much better solution than a Blackberry and a much better value than most PDAs running Windows Mobile Edition.

The Treo 650 by Palm, uses the Palm OS V5.x. One of the best things about using any Palm OS device is the wealth of software options/solutions that are available.

My Treo is loaded with a number of applications that make the most of its converged feature set and Internet connectivity. I use Agendus for contact management and Agendus Mail for email/SMS messaging. Using these on the Treo allows me to send/receive email to/from any of my contacts with a couple of touches. I can even get a weather report for my client/vendor locations, giving my conversations with them a more personal touch. Using VeriChat, I can chat with my contacts and family using MSN, Yahoo or AIM! With Pocket Tunes I can stream live music from the web and with AvantGo I always have the latest news and information at my fingertips.

In addition to Bluetooth, one of the nicest features of the Treo 650 is the ability to turn off the sound (ring tones, etc.) by simply sliding a switch on the top of the unit. This avoids fumbling with button combinations as you are going into a meeting or just before the movie starts! Up/down volume buttons on the side of the Treo make it easy to adjust the volume on the run.

The thumb keyboard is better than the one found on the Treo 600 and although it's not going to win you any typing contests, is perfectly adequate for entering contact info/phone numbers on the fly or entering search strings to lookup previously stored information. Most people will want enter new information using either the Palm Desktop software or Outlook and then synchronize it to their Treo.

The Treo 650 comes with an SD Memory card slot, typical of recent Palm models. Equipped with a 256M or larger SD card, the Treo can store a complete backup, hundreds of music files and offload programs from main memory to improve performance. The camera of the 650 takes both still pictures and movies with sound!

The decision to buy a Treo 650 or one the newer 700 series models shouldn’t be too difficult. The only significant differences between the 650 and 700 is the 700 supports the faster EV-DO wireless data standard and has a slightly refined keyboard. The 700 is also available in a Windows Mobile version.

Cost is currently (3rd Qtr, 2006) the major advantage the Treo 650 has over other converged devices, including the Treo 700p/w. Some providers, like Cingular are offering Treo 650s for as little as $199 with a one year contract. Compare this to $499 for a 700 with a two year contract from Cingular or Verizon and the value of the 650 becomes apparent. The 700 series faster performance and the potential of WiFi support, does not justify the additional cost. Add $100 worth of 3rd party applications, like Agendus, VeriChat, PocketTunes, Mapopolis to the Treo 650 and you have a solution that will handle virtually all your communication needs!

Note: Although the Treo 650 is not offered by T-Mobile, an unlocked Cingular or Generic Treo GSM model will work fine on the T-Mobile voice & data network!

As a Business and Technology Pro with over 15 years of experience, I give the Treo 650 Five (5) Stars! It is the most cost effective and value packed converged device available!

This is better than my previous pdas or cell phones. It's not as big as my Dell Axiom, has better reception then any of my Samsung or Nokia phones and you can dial from your contacts list(this may not sound like a big deal, but once you've tried it, you'll see what I mean). It can play mp3's so I can leave my iPod at home when at work. I like the key board much better than the graffiti. I added the Bluetooth headset making it hands free/cord free, so dialing and talking while driving a 5 speed manual is that much safer. The headset works fine within fifteen feet or so. I haven't discovered any software problems with it. If you know how to use Palm OS and a cell phone, you're good to go. Get a case/holster that protects the screen or risk shelling out 400 bucks for a new one. I hope this helps.

This phone has changed my life!

I was an early adopter with PDAs, owning the 3Com PalmPilot, then the Palm III, Vx and Zire. But I never liked carrying both a cell phone and a PDA, and frankly, often left my PDA at home.

With the Treo 650, Palm has finally answered my prayers -- a PDA and phone in one package. I was able to import all the Palm data that I've collected over the years -- addresses, task, calendar, memos.

I've also found the web browser, text messaging, camera (stills and video) and MP3 player to be useful. And of course all the Palm OS games like Bejeweled, Solitaire, etc on those long flights and boring bus/subway rides.

The Treo 650 is a bit bulky, but you'll get used to it. And at first I thought it was bit hard to hear calls, but that doesn't seem to be a problem now.

Battery life is surprisingly good -- better than what I got with my last cell phone.

Palm Treo 650 - A Phone That Does It All!
Review created: 09/01/06

I brought the palm treo 650 for my husband as an anniversary gift. He had been raving about the phone and how it is not much different from the Treo 700 (the latest version on the market). He actually prefers the 650 over the 700.

We both love that the phone is compact, easy to use and have soo many features (i.e., built-in camera, web access, blue tooth capability, etc.) You can literally spend days fiddling with the features on this phone. It is very functional (having a keypad on a phone makes it much easier to text and send e-mails) and the large color LCD screen is a huge plus. Also, all of your calls are clear and the battery life lasts pretty long considering all of the features this phone contains.

Another thing I absolutely love about the phone is the tons of accessories out there for the Treo. It's unbelievable how many different styles of protective cases exist for this phone.

The only dislike I can think of is the weight of the phone which can get a little uncomfortable especially if you do not use a headset while driving. But that is a minor con which can easily be solved with the use of a headset.

Overall, I highly recommend the Treo 650 phone. If you are looking for a phone that does it all, you will not be dissatisfied with the Treo 650!

I was looking for something that would be easy to use and the Treo 650 met that requirement... the screen is segmented into categories for easy navigation which I really like... easy access to email, vmail and the internet and of course making and answering a phone call and one more thing.. the Treo 650 comes with a camera and video capability which is a really nice perk.. The negatives would be the small buttons for letters but after awhile you get used to it and the size of the Treo is a bit bulky but I think this is true of all Palm/Treo type devices. Overall, this is a neat item and one that I would recommend.

I think this phone does it all. First of all great phone, something other all in ones may have forgotten. Good video, good pictures, great screen, solid OS, great battery, good bluetooth. The only thing this could do it answer itself. Overall very pleased. I have NEVER kept a phone more than 6 months, and I am almost at a year with this and still nothing close to making me upgrade.
Great games available for all those times you don't want to be productive.

The phone has it all. My husband uses it for work and, while I agree that it can be difficult to hear calls, he is able to access addresses, emails, interface it with secure info from his files at the office, and so much more. It is more delicate than regular cellphone, which when dropped usually survive unscathed. Unfortunately, this is why we had to purchase another since, after dropping, the screen shattered and the stylus could no longer be used to access info. This limited how fast and how much info could be accessed, defeating the purpose of the phone for him.

Caution should be used in purchasing from some EBAY sellers as many are selling "like new" (read "used and refurbished" due to problems with the phone when new). Our first phone arrived and was determined, by Verizon, to be a bad phone. Luckily the seller returned our purchase but we were out the expensive shipping and insurance as he refused to refund these fees. Our second purchase was a great experience and has worked perfect. This phone was not, however, sold by someone who buys refurbished in bulk without testing the product. This phone was sold by someone who took it in trade and was employed in a wireless store. So just be sure to ask as many questions as possible prior to buying and the phone will serve you well.

It is better than a laptop and can do just as much. I surf the internet, download programs, watch movies, type essays, talk with my bluetooth headset, read email blackberry style, instant message chat style etc..... It's so great there is a word describing a Treo lover- "Treonaut" and there of course is the website "Treo addicts" and another "palmaddicts" you get the idea. It's addicting!!!!

I'm going to start by saying this phone is not fantastic. It has great features allowing me to watch movies and keep track track of things easier. As a cell phone, it is not that easy to use. By this, I mean it's hard to just straight up pick up this cell phone and make a quick call like using a VX 3200 by verizon wireless or any kind of flip cell phone at that. You have to have tiny clean fingers in order to use this cell phone. Being the fact that the majority of Americans do not wash their hands frequently, this cell phone gets a boo' as for "as easy to use" do to the fact that it smugges. If you buy this cell phone, make sure it is a 2006 or higher model. IF YOU ARE A TECH SAVY PERSON, BUY THIS CELL PHONE, IF YOU JUST WANT TO A CELL PHONE TO MAKE CALLS QUICKLY, DO NOT UNLESS YOU WANT TO SHELL OUT AN EXTRA $20 BUCKS JUST TO MAKE THE VOICE DIAL FEATURE WORK.   Decent Device

I purchased the Treo used from EBay last month, and love it completely. It's got an amazing screen size, great for watching videos, picture slideshows, etc. Sound quality is great if you plan on using it as a MP3 player. It accepts the standard SD media cards - which allow me to go from my digital camera, to my Treo to watch videos, or pictures with no 'middleman'. The keyboard is decent sized, great for short messages, or if you have a really quick note to type. Otherwise, I wouldn't reccomend it for anything more important. I'm coming from generations of Treos - and I've never really been happy with their keyboards. The form figure has changed - which is a great improvement.

I'm moving to the PPC-6700, for my keyboard issues, and to try out Windows Mobile. Palm OS - a stable OS, has been the leader in the mobile device market for an extremely long time and has a much wider range of applications and many more support options than it's windows counterpart.

The Treo 650 works on the EVDO network, providing high-speed access to the network - however fails to provide WiFi access, preventing localized (even faster) speed communication.

All in all, it's a great device for the casual business/personal user - but for someone more intensely devoted to their work - such as myself- I'd suggest waiting for the Treo 700 to hit your network, or if you don't like the keyboard, try the PPC-6700, or get external bluetooth/infared keyboards.

I needed the Palm organizer benefits and got a good buy on the Treo on an auction. I am very impressed with all the features! I subscribed to the Cingular package and got my email on the go and everything! There is one more thing I am really interested in - the GPS add-on! But for now, after surfing the net a bit and checking my email a few times, I decided the $40 a month for the Cingular package was not worth it for me and dropped that. I love the fact that anything I have entered in the calendar that comes up appears on the phone when I use it so I am reminded. Now if I can only remember to PUT the stuff ON the calendar!

This phone has been good to be but there are a few problems.

If your not using a bluetooth headset with this phone and can be hard to hear people talking when holding it to your head and if you are using a bluetooth headset the range seems to be very limited as I get alot of static and I still can't tell if its the cheap headset or the phone thats causing it.

The battery doesn't seem to last that long but it IS a smartphone and I do have like 2 cradles (one at work one at home) and a car battery charger so its not much of a problem for me. it might be for others though.

other then that I do love the phone as i can easily make some notes or a memo on it then hot sync my computer and have them all on my phone or vice versa and I absoultey LOVE that is hotsyncs with my MS outlook calender... I use my calender for everything so not having to type things twice is awesome...

and text messeging is pretty easy to.

Improved photo capabilities from the 600. Buttons are easier to push (not so rounded). The phone is bulky, but handles many tasks. I would like to see a better program for phone numbers with the palm system. If it syncronizes with outlook, you often get duplicate entries.

  Rethinking the one device concept
Review created: 06/01/06
by:
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I bought my Palm 650 Treo a year ago from Cingular and I recently gave up on it. Like most buyers, I was initially attracted to the "one device for all needs" concept that Palm touted, and for the first few weeks that I had it, I was totally in love with my Treo.

Couple of months later, I had a recurring problem with the thing "freezing" on me so much that I had to re-boot constantly. Then, I started having problems when the screen went on power-saver mode, it would refuse to light up again. Then the last straw was when the antenna broke off!! I swear I didn't drop it. I had to pay Palm $150 to repair the antenna, since it was by default considered "customer's fault" and was not covered by the manufacturers' warranty. This on top of the nearly $400 that I paid when I first got the phone!

It was then that I started re-thinking my love for my Palm Treo. I mean, did I really need all these features, half of which I didn't even use? And it's no fun whenever I forget my bluetooth device and I'm holding up this clunky, unwieldy device to my ear.

So now, I have the Motorola Razr. I'm still feeling my way around it, but I think I may be in love again.

I have used the TREO 650 for some time. Overall I like the device and PDA. I have had the Treo 660 with Cingular and Sprint. Sprint is by far the way to go with a Treo. Overall set-up and features of Sprint service fit nicely with TREO 650.

Now's the time to buy, most service providers getting rid of 650 for the new 700 series. I got my last Treo for $162.00

Palm Treo 650 is overall one the best cell phone you can buy. The call quality is one of the best on the market. These ease of use and the size of the key board make the 650 a great buy.
The speaker phone is loud and clear, the phone rings are loud and clear. The calendar and memos, contact, sync up with ms outlook very easily. The palm os is very easy to learn and you can find many programs to change the wallpaper icons to a more modern look. One must have free program is called mintones; this program turns your favorite mp3 songs to ringtones. This phone has been around for a while and continues sell on EBay very well. The palm Treo 650 is a great phone you will be happy with the phone. If you are looking for great phone at a fair price you cannot do better the 650. There are many good deals here in EBay. You can go to Palm.com to download the latest software and can used with Vista as well. 1. Call quality is excellent, 2. Great for texting, 3. Tons for software for Palm os.
