I recently bought a Palm Tungsten T5, since I have had Pilot IIIx and V in the past. I've always have had problems with them. With the III, one day it stopped working all together. With the Palm Pilot V, I had several issues, which I will not mention due to time restrictions (it would take me quite a bit to describe and detail). Then I bought a Compaq iPAQ and I was very satisfied, but I had to constantly re-charge so I decided to buy another Palm PDA from reading some reviews. Well, I've only been with it for 4 months and I already began to have many problems. The T5 resets ALL the time and once it does this, I cannot get it to work or ever turn on, it sort of freezes and I have to hard and system reset, which at this point I loose all my data. But not even with these kinds of resets, will the palm pilot T5 actually work, it freezes again as it is "booting" up, when the round "PALM" logo is displayed. I have contacted PALM and they are not honoring the warranty and I would need to pay $165 to repair! Then I get in their sugested forums and I note that there are quite a large number of people who have the same problem with different types of Palm products, such as W, tugsten E2 and E3, Trio, etc. We all get the same error: LauncherMain.c, Line .... and they have horror stories to tell from PALM's awful service! I even had a chance to talk to a Palm rep and actualy said, and I quote .. "that is your problem now, you bought it [T5] and now you have to solve it ..." !!! I just want to make this story public so that you really thing about ever purchasing anything from PALM. If you need more info, you can contact through my e-mail: mauricio.solorzano@gmail.com. Thank you.

I've had my Tungston T5 for almost four years. Initially I had the same problems reported in the other review. But when I deleted documents to go all the problems went away. I don't know if it was incompatable with Epocrates or if it was because I was using WordPerfect instead of Word. Regardless, I don't need that function. So I have had success with it -- until this week, when the power management for the keyboard driver would not work properly. DK how I'm going to solve this one.

I bought the Tungsten T5 to replace a Tungsten T3 that I had used for serveral years. I loved the T3 but the battery wouldn't keep a charge and when I installed a new battery, it still wouldn't retain its charge very long. I could read an ebook for only 45 minutes.

I haven't come close to draining the T5's battery during ebook reading sessions of 2-3 hours so the T5 is great in the battery category. It's display is also brighter and more crisp than the T3 though according to the specs it is not supposed to be. I was disappointed that the T5 does not have a slider like the T3 to expand and shrink its size. Rather, the T5 is almost the size of the expanded T3. Also, the imitation leather cover is flimsier than the one that comes with the T3 but a variety of 3rd party covers and cases are available through eBay.

In all other ways the T5 retained the T3's capabilities for me: synching with Microsoft Office and Outlook at work on a PC, and at home on a Macintosh with Entourage, ebooks, AA airline schedules, etc.

The T5 has only 4 buttons compared to the 5 on the T3 which is a dificiency since I programmed all 5 buttons for my most common apps. However, the T5 has 4 additional virtual buttons on the screen that I programmed for more yet apps, so maybe that is a "push".

The biggest disappointment of the T5 compared to the T3 is the synch-charger cable that it comes with as opposed to a cradle. My charger cable is so delicate that I cannot rely on it to charge unless I am physically holding the cable tightly connected! I bought a separate cradle and it charges reliably but is also a disappointment compared to the T3 cradle because it lacks a button to synchronize; instead you have to click on the screen icon to charge, and first you have to bring up that screen.

All in all I still rate the T5 as excellent for use for synchonrization of calendar, notes, tasks, email, Word-Excel-PowerPoint files as well as its use as an eReader and for other desktop apps like calculators. It plays music but I don't use it for that. It also can synch email in real time and browse the web via a Bluetooth phone but I don't use that feature yet.

I bought a new T5 last year and really loved it. It had all my Appointments and Contacts. Plus I used RandMacNally Maps, listened to mp3s, and read E-books. I had the palm t5 for 9 months before it needed to be replaced on warranty (12month warranty). The ON switch would not work and needed to be soft-reset whenever I wanted to turn it ON. . Palm did not want to cover the ON switch but I went to corporate and they sent me a refurb. The refurb had a 90 day warranty and died in 115 days with a "fatal exception error".
The only way I would buy another palm would be a really cheap used one that I wouldn't care about if it dies.

  Decent Product, Lousy Customer Service

I started my relationship with Palm when I received a Palm III as a gift. I loved it!. A couple of years later I tried a Sony Clie because of all the features it offered. When the T5 came out I was thrilled that Palm had come out with a PDA with such great features. A great screen, plenty of memory and the familiar Palm OS.

I am on my 3rd T5. I have learned an extended warranty is well worth the money. Office Depot replaced my first one when I slammed it in the car door. Ooops. I had it less than a year with only minor problems (mostly frequent errors requiring soft resets). Office Depot quickly honored the warranty I had with them. With the second T5 I bought a sturdy case to help protect it along with the extended warranty.

Within a year I started having power problems. The power button stopped functioning, which I was still able to use the function keys to power it on but I couldn't turn it off. When I called Palm I had the same experience that many others seem to have had. They did not want to stand behind their product. Initially they tried to tell me that they would not honor their warranty because a non-functioning power button was considered abuse. Using the power button to turn it on and off is abuse! The rep then tried to convince me that since I had used their product for almost, ALMOST a full year they had honored their "one year warranty." Finally after several follow up phone calls "escalating" the call, they agreed to replace it with a refurbished T5 that has lasted "almost" 2 years.

Other calls to Palm Customer No-service have been equally illuminating. I was considering buying a 4th T5 on eBay or to replace my quickly declining one or making the move to a Treo, but thank you to everybody who has written a review reminding me that Palm does not want my business. Maybe it is time to make a move from Palm. Or maybe I can find another used T5 to make it almost another year!

  Excelent PALM! Stable and fast!

This palm is excellent. I have had no problems with it at all it just works! My friend has a palm TX and he has problems with it that it restarts constantly or sometimes it don't turn on. The Palm Tungsten T5 never gave me any problems like that. This palm is the most stable palm I ever used. The only thing that is missing is Wifi. But you can buy a wifi card now. The battery life is decent considering its a 400 mhz processor in it. This palm is fast compared to other palms and runs videos smoothly compared to other palms. I highly recommend this palm over others like the TX.

I paid nearly $300.00 for this item. I havent been able to use it since I bought it.
The unit is in good shape. However, it wont hold a charge, wont accept downloads, and the WiFi card that it came with wont even connect to the internet. My husband works for a computer company and it wont even connect in the building.
Extremely unhappy with this product.
I bought this item mainly because my husband would be using it for work. No chance of that.

I purchased a T5 from Palm One, Palm's internet site. I've had 3 or 4 different Palm Pilots over the years, starting with a Palm Pro and ending with this T5. Short of the story is Palm refused to honor the warranty when it went bad. The T5 was a nice machine until one day when it decided to simply quit working, apparently not that uncommon. Palm then proceeded to waste my time for several days finally deciding not to help. Bottom line: Decent machine when it worked, but a lousy company.

  Digitizer problems
Review created: 03/07/09
by:
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

These PDAs are great, but have a flaw--the touch screen that is used for operation of the device (called the "digitizer") can fail, rendering the otherwise working device essentially useless. It is like having a fully functional computer with no mouse or keyboard--you can't do anything with it. There are outfits out there that will replace the digitzer for you; however, it is easier and cheaper just to buy a replacement Tungsten T5 on eBay.

  PALM TUNGSTEN T5
Review created: 02/06/09(updated 02/06/09)
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I purchased it as a replacement for my aged pocketPC. I didn't like the TINY side bar scroller which makes scrolling difficult if button scrolling is not used. When the unit stalls the RESET hole button does NOT accommodate the size of the STYLUS. So, you'll have to use a paper clip to RESET the system. NO WIFI, only BLUETOOTH. Horizontal Screen viewing is cluttered with keyboard attributes. Screen lighting is not bright enough during daylight hours. But, since I got it at a used price and fair condition am willing to keep it.

I agree with the other writers. Don't buy a T5. I have one and it has been very frustrating. It would not turn on even with soft and hard booting. I even replaced the battery thinking that was the problem.. AND what a deal that was! DON'T I repeat..DON'T buy a T5. In fact after reading the other reviews, I am considering buying an HP.

Palm T5 - A Great PDA for the Money
Review created: 06/23/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The palm T5 a pretty good choice for a Palm PDA. It sells cheaply, because it isn't the newest Palm model. However, it has all of the features of the top-of-the line model, the TX, except wifi. And a wifi card works great!

Overall, its a great choice. Nice screen, bluetooth, audio, and more make it as capable as any other pda.

. . Que Dios te ayude. (Jaitre)

I bought the Tungsten T5 as part of a box set which included ViaMichelin SATNAV over 18 months ago. I bought it initially for the SATNAV capability and nothing else. I have had major problems uploading the software and have not used the item once since purchasing it. I have contact Viamichelin and Tungsten on a number of occasions with no joy. I am considering cutting my losses and buying a TOMTOM. Can anyone advise?

When you need a Palm PDA, a smart phone won't do.

Palm Pilots, generically speaking, are orphans. The OS was last updated several years ago. My Tungsten died, so I borrowed my wife's T/X for a while. Then I went to my cellular provider to check out its supply of smart phones. I found small screens and expensive data plans. I would have to rebuild my software supply from scratch.
I figured out that I didn't need a smart phone. I needed another Palm Pilot. So I got the T5 on EBay. It doesn't have WiFi access, as the T/X does. But it's supposed to have a faster processor.
Hey, it's a Palm. It's what I need to sync with my Outlook calendar and to have handy Spanish & Italian dictionaries, currency converters, Documents to Go, mortgage amortization programs, and on and on.

This used Palm T5 appears to be everything the previous owner said it was. It is in near mint condition and at first usage, appears to operate perfectly. The pristine nature of the touch screen shows the minimum amount of usage. The case he supplied with this Plam T5 is almost identical to the one on my old T5. All in all, EXACTLY what I had wanted, and at a very reasonable price.

My thanks to Ebay and to this seller.

After much seeking(that part was ok) finally I got a chance to have4 a new Palm device. When it got here the batery of the PDA wasn't working and there was no warranty. I had to look for a place to fix it with my own money.
Spending a lot of gas I got to that place and it cost me $37 plus all the gas and the time I spent.
