  Great college PDA

I received this PDA as a high school graduation gift a few years ago and it worked great for everything I needed. It was top-of-the-line when it came out and did more than I needed. I have since upgraded to the Treo 650 which again does more than I need.

Pros: PDA fits right into your pocket even with the sleek leather case. External cards can be added for more memory, games, apps, etc. The screen is big. Color was good. Easy to sync.

Cons: Outdated and battery life is not excellent, just average.

A couple years ago I recieved a new Palm Pilot M130 as a gift from my parents. As a student I was pretty excited about what the possiblities were. I could get rid of some notebooks because I could keep class notes on it (thanks to the handy keyboard accessory), I could keep all my phone numbers and email addresses, and whatever appointments I had. Also I thought I could throw a game or two on there for the boring times in between classes.
Well I did all that, and it was good.
However, there are a couple of things that I don't like about this particular PDA. The battery life is non existent, if you forget to charge this thing overnight you should write down all your appointments for the day on a piece of paper and leave the Palm on the charger because it will not last to the afternoon. Also along with the battery life being short it's not customer replaceable(it's a Lithium Ion), so you have to send it off to Palm to get the battery replaced if it quits, and God help you if it's not under warranty anymore, I've heard the fee for a Palm service is 120 dollars plus YOU pay shipping. So you might as well just buy a whole new device.
And if you do let the battery go dead you better have done a HotSync right before because ALL of your information will be lost. And you better be ready for it to fail on you regularly. It has failed at least 3 times on me.
But if you are on top of charging, and HotSync it whenver new stuff is added or taken away then this should be easy to fix and little more than a minor headache. Just get used to saying "It did it again." If you are looking for a shopping list or something to keep your schedule and phone numbers in, then this product is, now, inexpensive and has the memory to do it (provided you charge and HotSync regularly)
I suggest that you save up some more money and buy a more powerful Dell or HP.

I remember the good old days. The Palm m130 was the one that made the M100 series a hit. This PDA is actually the last model for the M-series.

8MB of storage isn't that bad for its age. The good thing about it is that it limits your usage. Doesn't have much features but it does what is designed for. Keep track of time, todo list, phone book, etc. However this device could of been better in a point. The screen is a bit small to see. Is pretty good, if you just want a simple PDA, than this is good enough..

This device does not support MP3 I don't think. No audiojack.. Just polyphonic beeps..

This was a great palm, I used it for years and have no complaints. The battery held up well and held charges for a good period of time. Newer palms have nicer screens and more features but you cant beat the price if picking up a used one.

  a pretty good little PDA

I have owned a Palm M130 for over 5 years now and my first one was losing battery power so I bought a battery which really helped. However, before I received another one, I put in the new battery and lost all of everything that was in my Palm (My bad but I was on vacation and not near my computer). I did get all my books back into it but not some of the games. It was also pretty scratched up even with the screen saver plastic film cover. Then, I bought 2 more from eBay because I love the little thing. I mostly use it for reading books when I travel. I wish I knew more about the phone/pda combinations but, alas, I do not so I stick with what I know. The back light is adjustable from bright to dim, unlike the 505 which I had. Anyway, it goes whereever I go.

  inexpensive way to get organized
Review created: 07/06/06

Bought to use with students with organization and/or handwriting problems. Needed inexpensive pdas that we could afford to lose, but that would be able to hold documents.
Good: nice screen, well backlit, inexpensive b/c it is out of date, peripherals and documents to go for it are also inexpensive. Has all the basic tools. Memory, though very low by today's standards is sufficient for student docs.
Negative: need to add a free download to prevent mad digitizer syndrome--a problem that is in the m series that I was not aware of. Loses data if it fully discharges unlike the newer palm devices.

  AWESOME STARTER PDA
Review created: 04/09/06
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My Husband has used a Palm M130 for about 4 years & could not be happier with it. He stated that he has not encountered any of the downfalls that other reviewers have mentioned in the past with lost data or short battery life. He did however say that the item could have had more onboard memory, but when he added a 128mb memory card to the pda that he then had more than enough memory to do all of the required tasks that he needed the pda for. In conclusion it is my opinion that not every experiance with an item is the same & that you should judge an item for yourself. happy e-baying

I use this PDA for work and we bought a few of them. So far I've seen many things in the M130 that I do not like. I like that it's color and has the same functionalities as the other palm products. What I do not like about it is that several times the M130 resets by itself and I lose all of my information. It has happened to several of the ones we purchased at work and when I contacted Palm about the issue they informed me that they have heard of the problem but do not have the solution (I have not called them lately so I don't know if they fixed that or not.) Another thing I do not like is the cradle. The pins on the cradle where the M130 connects to is very flimsy. Mine already broke and won't charge anymore and won't sync. I have to get a different one. If you don't mind synchronizing every time you get a chance and buying a new cradle when it breaks then this will be an ok buy for you.

I love the amount of info you can store in this Palm. It is more versitile than a phone with applications and backup to a computer is very simple.

I cannot live without one after having tried to use my cell phone to do the same tasks and was very disappointed.

This Palm M130 works very good.
It is well worth the money that I paid for it.
Palm lets you download a free desktop PIM that I use every day.

The only thing is that to load the photos you have to use a converter before
you can install it on your palm M130.

  Reason for purchasing Palm M130
Review created: 07/28/09
by:

My previous unit died, I wanted another one. The seller had what I was looking for at a price that I was willing to pay, so I bid on it and won.
The Palm M130 is the exact unit I had before, so I was totally familiar with it and decided to get another one.

  My two cents
Review created: 07/24/09

love the size, portability, and easy to read, colorful display.Very simple to navigate and use.
I do not like the way it slides onto it's charger/docking cradle as it does not snap-in tight and always feels like a flimsy connection.I would like a more sturdy and quality feel to a device when I am docking.Other than this I have nothing but good things to say about this gem of an older PDA.

  Palm Lemon
Review created: 07/07/09

The unit came with a USB cord to hook up to the computer without a hot sync button and there is no hot sync button on the unit itself. So there is no way to back-up information or move applications to the unit. Basically I got a keyboard and nice case for the next Palm I buy. I just hope it's the same size. This purchase was a waste.... let the buyer beware.

  Nice,simple and cheap PDA
Review created: 06/21/09

The m130 was Palms midrange offering, though now would be low end.
The m130 was one of the first offerings in color, it used the Dragonball processor from Motorola, and w/ 16mb of ram these were realy nice units.
The final selling point for me back in the day and still to this day is how rugged they are. I have just about destroyed these guys before, they take the abuse and still function.
Everything you need in a pda for still works fine w/ the older palms. Though it will not use the newest PalmOS or be able to use the newest versions of software core functions are still there, Ie PIM,Calander,Reminder,Phonebook,Notes. For the price, unless you need the lastest greatest PDA these are a perfect match. The other beauty of getting older PDA's is that lot of the software is now freeware, and the library of software is so huge.

  Palm M130
Review created: 05/21/09

This is the most important tool I have ever owned. It has the basic contact and planning functions critical to everyday business life. I have loaded several games which make unexpected delays easier to deal with. This device is also loaded with a 200+ volume library of current and classic books and magazines which make traveling much easier and provide entertainment that is increasingly unavailable in public places and motels.
