I've adored my Zire 71 for a few years now. It's my first Palm; I'd had only Handspring before that, and was wary when they went under. What I love about this PDA is the surprisingly clear digital camera and the easy to navigate MP3 player, by Real Player. However, Palm's new core software sucks a little in their upgrades of Datebook and Grafiti. Their old platforms allowed for "floating events" and allowed To Do item to show on the Date Book. Grafiti 2 is just dumb, Grafiti 1 is so much easier to use (check internet tech groups for hacks!).

The only reason I'm dissatified is because I'm spoiled now by new technological advances and really want WIFI on my PDA. So, I'm upgraded to Zire 72. The 72's the only Palm with a digital camera, WIFI capacity and the MP3 option.

Good choice as used -ebay- PDA

I like:
- you can add memory - SD card
- good as mp3 player (using SD card) + organizer + oxford dictionary+other palm software (ebooks), pdf, maps.

I don't like:
- short life of battery - max 2 days on standby
- lack of lock function - if you keep the zire 71 in a small case or bag and any of the controls get pushed the pda display will turn on and eat the battery.
- lack of real encryption for stored data - don't store any sensitive infos on this PDA !! If you loose it or get stolen ....they have your data for free !!!
- the built-in camera failed after 3 months !! after all kinds of reset ... hardware/software ..I give up ...no digital camera.
- strange ticking noise when is ON ? Someone told me is because there was a wrong instalation of the frame over the touch screen ...possible to be true.

Conclusion:
is a good PDA but don't ask too much from zire 71 ...

The Zire71 is the best you can get for its price

Concidering how the market for handheld organizers is today, it seems doubtful that you'll find any other equally-entertaining PDA at the price for one of these. I've had my unit for a little over a year now, and let's just say it has been fabulous. none of the buttons wiggle, and the slider still works just as crisp as it has been when I first recieved it.

Really, I love the bright screen. I love the full bassy sound when I tweak the EQ, and even though the camera isn't great, I love it when at least I HAVE a camera around to capture those short stupid moments. A resolution of 640x480 seems dissapointing these days, especially when it's also a tad on the blurry side, but, hey, for a PDA at this price, who's complaining? Also to be said, is the video playing capability. With the right application and adequate compression, the videos do play quite well. To be honest, I must say it is more useful than my laptop when used on a daily basis.

Battery life is good. Well, due to my use as my MP3 player, I have to charge it everyday, but I'll say it has about the same battery life as my iPod Nano when the EQ is turned on. While on the subject of sound, I'd hate to say this, but the Zire71 blows the Nano away on the same set of earphones. Doesn't matter if you tune the EQ or not. I do however believe that the external speaker COULD be a little bit louder and clearer.

Oh, and I really, MUST say something about the durability. Even though I have dropped this thing on the floor many times from waist height, the pda still seems like its just used normally. scratches are still virtually non-existant unless u look closely at the edges, its then when you notice the few dents.

For its low pricetag, I can't seem to think of another device that can rival the performance and functions of the Zire71. The functions can keep up with the latest competitors, while maintaining the best bang for the buck factor. Perfect for someone who's looking for a good solid first handheld. It's cheaper than the Zire72 but you aren't missing much. The Zire71 still holds its own ground in today's PDA market.

Zire 71 a very good Palm PDA

My Tungsten C would not power up a few days after I dropped it, and I was heartbroken. Not wanting to blow another $150 on a device that did not last a year in my hands, I set my sites on the cheapest Palm PDA with a 320x320 color screen. The Zire 71 fit the price point. I read that the Zire 71's processor was very fast even though it was under 200 Mhz (the Tung C is 400 Mhz) and my software should fit within the 15 MB of usable memory... Now, several months later, after the dust settled with restoring all my software, and adding more... I am delighted. It is fast, and with a 1 GB SD card installed, you can take all the pictures you want, and store much music, ebooks, and videos. The screen is very legible, and can be read in fairly bright sunlit conditions. I am a Dave Allen/GTD freak, so was delighted to find that I could load Docs-to-Go, Beyond Contacts, SmartList, Bible software, Daynotez, Life Balance, Avantgo without a problem. No PDA is perfect. The included Real Player software for playing MP3's is serviceable, but I have separate gripes about Real Player PC software that makes me want to find a different MP3 player for the palm. The metal backplate, that slides down to expose the camera lens is probably the reason that the Zire 71 feels the sturdiest of all the PDAs I have used (III, IIIxe, m125, i705, Tung C). I am very careful, as I don't think the 71 will hold up to drops any better than the Tung. C, but I could be wrong. The "pouch"-shaped case looked awkward at first, but it does such a good job of protection, and is easier than you would think to use continuously. I keep my Palm in my pocket most of the time, and the pouch is just the right protection for the pocket. Once you get used to it, the joystick is the best scrolling device I have used, and I was pretty fond of the Tung. C's "disk and button" control!
I will end by saying that if you don't need wireless capability on you Palm, go for the Zire 71. You won't be sorry.

I bought a Palm Zire 71 because my wife has a Palm Zire 72. I was amazed at all the features on just one device. I quickly saw that I needed a Palm Zire of my own. I do some traveling for my job and now I can make appointments, write notes, have my phone book, keep track of expenses, connect with other wireless devises, take pictures, listen to music and set my alarm. All of this and more with just my new Palm Zire 71

  go to the zire 72

If price is a concern stay with the zire 71. but for a little more features and little bit higher pricetag you will enjoy it. The camera on the zire slides out and is hidden from scratches, unless it is to be used. the palm operating system is very intuitive and a time saving os. i basiclally believe i can do what i wnat to do on a pda with half the clicks i would have to click on a windows pda. i like the zire 72 which is the next model up since it adds bluetooth, slimer case, and voice memos. i record voice memos that can last for days when i add an external sd card.

Still a great device -- and still running strong
Review created: 09/08/08

The Zire 71 still manages to be a great Palm device! It better in some ways than most of the Palms that followed. As is often the case, when something works, a company abandons it.

Though not super fast, you will not find a need for speed on a PDA very often. The device has a built-in camera that takes decent photos, and although many phones now have them, few sync their phones with their desktop like they do a Palm. Taking cameras off their devices is an example of one of those stupid moves that Palm did.

The Palm Zire 71 has all the Palm standard features, is durable, has a rechargeable battery, and a camera that stays hidden away for protection. Still happy with it after all these years.

Palm Zire 71 - PDA Manufactured around 2003
Review created: 08/28/08
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

In my opinion the Palm Zire 71 is an excellent device.
It has all the functionality of the Palm's that came before it and a few new cool functions too.

I love the Color Screen because it is so clear and sharp and easy to read. There is no need to find the correct lighting or angle to see the information on the screen.
I like that it has Memory Expansion via an SD Card slot, so you can increase your capacity to store all of your important information. NOTE: Even some of the Brand New Palm's do not have the Memory Expansion capability.
The Palm Zire 71 also plays MP3's, and the Memory Expansion is a great feature if you're going to play lots of them.
I really like the fact that it has Flash Memory which saves the data stored on your internal memory. So, if your battery fails without you knowing it, you don't lose your data. This is an exceptional feature especially if you forget to HotSync your data to your computer.
And additional accessories and replacement parts like cases and batteries are readily available for the Zire 71.
There is also a whole lot of Freeware available for the Palm Operating System.
About the only thing I'm not crazy about is the built in camera (which I probably won't use because the picture quality is not that great), but it still is an interesting feature.
Just like the other Palm's before it, the Palm Zire 71 has everything I need (and more), and it's easy to use and quite a handy device to have around.

I decided to purchase the Palm Zire 71 because I recently had a AAA battery break and leak in my very much older - yet ever faithful - Palm III. There was no power, and of course, no data either. Thank goodness for the Palm OS Hot Sync. Always remember to Backup.
I got my data back, but I decided that after 12 good years with my Palm III, it was time to upgrade to a newer Palm PDA. After reading reviews and seeing the Prices of the brand new Palm PDA's I decided that the Zire 71 was the PDA for me. Since there are no new ones available on the market today, I'd have to get a used one. No better place to look than on eBay. And all those additional accessories and replacement parts are available there too.

  Palm Zire 71 -- It's what I needed.
Review created: 06/04/07

After 3 yrs and too often used by my toddler daughter, my Zire 31's screen was not reading properly. I went to get a replacement, and then noticed that for only a few dollars more I could upgrade to a Zire 71 or 72. I had become addicted to my Palm calendar and it is all I used to schedule my life. The 71 has a bigger screen and seems to be sharper and quicker. It really doesn't have too many more things than the 31, it's just packaged nicer. One thing that does suck is the dock you have to use to charge and to sync to your computer.

While not as versitile as some of the newer palms I love this one. It is easy to use and the hotsync feature is fantastic! I do wish it had internet ability but thats what laptops are for, right? All in all for the price and the ease of use you can't go wrong with this little beauty. The only real con is that since it is a little older it is hard to find add on stuff such as software and even replacment stylis. I had to get mine from another ebay seller.

  Disappointing

I purchased this palm to replace a damaged one; and because this particular seller was offering many games and programs preinstalled. When I received the package, I was surprised to find the items had not been shipped with any protective packaging material! The items were tossed about so bad I was surprised they even worked! The games and programs that were included were shareware which is fine but the disk did not include any program keys, therefore I would still have to pay for them. I would not purchase from this seller again.

  Great PDA 2 problems
Review created: 07/02/06(updated 09/02/08)

Great PDA, beautiful screen, I have not found the way to installl apps on the memory card so I have to use main memory (8MB) and this has been one limitation that I have found, I have tried to contact Sony to get the update from os 3.5.2 to 4.1 but they have not answered my request.
Beside this two minor disadvantages, the machine has great sound (mp3 with headphones), its fairly fast, feels way more luxurious and solid than any other Palm PDA, the screen resolution is a plus for using Quick Office.
