Oh, to be a frontier woman, challenged by adversaries that don't believe in fair play and have Clint Eastwood (he of the Man with No Name variety) ride into town on a dapple grey horse and save the day.
After nine years, Clint Eastwood returns to the western genre he became famous for and submits a masterful piece of mystery, intrigue and adventure in the name of PALE RIDER. With an incredibly talented supporting cast including Michael Moriarty, Carrie Snodgress, Christopher Penn and Richard Dysart, Clint Eastwood appears out of nowhere as what seems at first to be no more than a good samaritan. After saving gold-panning Hull Barrett (Moriarty) from a gang of thugs sent by the local strip-mining boss (Dysart), Hull gladly returns the kindness. He invites Clint's character back to his stake to share a meal with his would-be family, an abandoned woman (perfectly portrayed by Carrie Snodgress) and her young teenage daughter, played by Sydney Penny (who was specially awarded for her touching performance as Megan). Through a series of intentional misunderstandings, Clint allows himself to be called Preacher and quietly rallies the other stake-holders to stand together and hold fast to their claims.
As the pressure mounts from the strip-mining boss' attempts to discourage the panners, one watches the Preacher's attitude escalate from annoyance to anger to a vengeful state that is indicated no more clearly than in his confrontation with the hired guns Dysart's character recruits to fight his war for him. In a climactic scene that will be savored by the typical Eastwood fan, the townspeople come to realize that this man is much more than a "preacher", if he is one at all.
Not just for the "tough-guy" movie fan, this entry into Eastwood's library of winners definitely ranks up there among his best. It contains pathos ranging from anguish to humor to tenderness, many of which are rarely explored by the modern western. All in all, this is a fine piece of entertainment for anyone that believes in standing up for your rights, no matter how embattled and out-numbered you may feel.

What Eastwood fans have come to expect from his westerns you will find in Pale Rider, with one exception. The man with no name is an avenging angel, and has nothing to gain from his actions... save his call to duty. Not on the same level as High Plains Drifter or Outlaw Josey Wales, but still a great example of the genre and Eastwood.

pale rider is one of Clent Eastwoods best movies.clent played the part so well,clent makes you feel part of the story.For a western film it is hard to draw people into the film.last but not least,there was a lot hidden plots in the movie.

A very good western movie, believable story.
) A good story, set in a viable setting. Excellent scenery, good character actors. Clothing, gear, landscape and buildings are in sync with the time frame, (plus or minus 1860's). A bit of surreal twist...very entertaining movie.

This is an excelent western. It has Eastwood at his best. It is the classic old western tale of a stranger with a haunted past. Eastwood, the Preacher, appears to help a small group of miners that have set up their operation in a spot the local bigshot miner wants for himself. The local bigshot uses hydro mining and believes he has a motherload waiting under the "tin pans", that he first tries to convince Eastwood of them "squatting" on his land. Lots of gritty Eastwood humor and action.

Not much that Clint Eastwood does is other than fantastic. It has been reported that his character in this movie is based on Orrin Porter Rockwell, but I don't see it. Other than the hat and defense of the innocent, there seems to be no paralell.
As with all of Clint's movies, story line, photography, character development and everything else is just great.

right when i saw the movie and the price, i just had to buy it. I wanted to buy it because i really like the movie and the price was just insane, seller knows what the buyers want and that is what i like about this seller. I absolutely loved the product quality. Description was a perfect match. Its a risk to buy something used, especially something like a dvd. But the quality was such that you couldnt even tell it wasnt brand spankin new.
