Malcolm Gladwell has become an influential public educator by examining the obvious. In Outliers- successful people who stand out from the rest of the crowd- he posits that where a person comes from matters, whether you are Bill Gates or the Beatles. His gift as a writer is to look for answers in the wisdom and research of experts, academics, kooks- ouliers all.
The lesson of Outliers is this: Successful people are not successful by accident. They are the product of will and determination, and of forces beyond their control: ancestry, parenting, community and....dumb luck. He argues that practice is an important part of success- a minimum of 10,000 hours, no matter what the specialty.
Gladwell's broader assertion is that there are no real outliers. Successes, he writes, "are products of history and community, of opportunity and legacy. Their success is not exceptional or mysterious. It is grounded in a web of advantages and disadvantages, some deserved, some not, some earned, some just plain lucky- but all critical to making them who they are." In other words, if it's not something, it's another. Life is a crapshoot. Each person is special.
Gladwell manages to make these pedestian observations interesting, somehow, and anyone who has read his previous books will find this one just as instructive.

I bought this book for my oldest son's birthday after reading it myself. My son's a smart, ambitious, entrepreneurial young man in his early 40's. I'd read two of the author's earlier bestsellers, "Blink " (which I loved) and "The Tipping Point" (which I liked).
"Outliers" is a fascinating study of the relationship between success and birth month. Gladwell explains how success in athletics and school is likely less related to talent and more related to how early in the year an athlete or student is born.
Since most school systems and many athletic teams frequently have an age eligibility criterion based on birthday cutoff date of January 1, those born early in the year may have a 9-12 month advantage over their classmates and teammates. This can be a huge advantage when children are young as they are likely more mature. This maturity makes them better/smarter than many of their classmatesteammates which may give them special incentives, privileges and opportunities. The author thus concludes that this age advantage may have more to do with their subsequent success than just talent alone, although talent certainly has a role to play also.
I highly recommend this fascinating dissection of this social/cultural phenomenon.

Keeps you intrested throughout the book. Good data points shared by the author to strengthen his argument. The examples shared are nt constrained to any one area but range from sports to engineering.

I have read previous books written by Malcolm Gladwell and both were excellent. Outliers is no exception. The book is excellent. I prefer the audio version because it allows me to experience the emotion in Gladwell's voice as he reads his book. Listening to an audio version also makes better use of my time while traveling. Great book!

Once again Mr. Gladwell does not disappoint. Like his prior publications, this book delves into one of life's larger questions. How do the incredibly successful people of this world get to their prominent status? In typical Gladwell fashion, we are taken on a journey to Canada, China, Korea, America. We comb through relevant Data. We explore case studies. All this to find out what is truly elevating people to the status they're at. This book does a good job of taking away the "deity" status many of us have given to the successful. Once outlier success has been brought back to earth, it opens the door to many more who thought it was out of reach.
He makes a powerful case for how society should reevaluate the way it perceives, finds, and fosters success. He challenges us to forget the old paradigms of the past and look to the future where more opportunities for success can be afforded to many more. He shows how small things can make a difference.
At the risk of sounding cliche'... This book is Zen like. As the pages unfold before you, you feel as though you already knew the truth, you just couldn't remember it yet.
He makes a powerful case for how society should reevaluate the way it perceives, finds, and fosters success. He challenges us to forget the old paradigms of the past and look to the future where more opportunities for success can be afforded to many more. He shows how small things can make a difference.
