Out of the Shadows by Patrick Carnes (2001, Paperback)

After finding out about my husband's sexual encounters with around 100 different women over the past 5 years..I reached for this book he had purchased 2 years earlier to get answers to my excruciating pain and horror!! This book was painfully HONEST and open and told the story of my life with my husband for the past 17 years of marriage. Of all the books I have read since..this book is still at the top of the list of favorites! Codependency was eye opening! My husband tried to tell me about this escalating problem 10 years earlier but I didn't understand it then and it has been painful to learn about it now and how far it progressed with and without my help. I've taken the hard road to stay married and don't regret the hard work!! We are so much happier than we have ever been and we work at it daily. This book gives you knowledge to give you power and strength! More personal commentaries would help polish it up to perfection! I had to find other women's stories of recovery with their sex addict husbands as well as the sex addicts success stories to help me cope moment to moment, then day to day..now it is month to month!! He never liked himself our entire marriage and now I could see why with this book laying it all out to see every detail!! It is difficult to separate the addiction from the person but this book made it plain to see the difference!! Everything has changed since the Secret Life has been revealed!! I'm soooo grateful for the incredible insight of Patrick Carnes to bring this secret agony to light!!

As a lay counselor, I contacted Focus on the Family, Dr. James Dobson's organization about a situation in which a friend had confided in me: Sexual addiction. This book along with other titles was recommended for me to offer to the affected family.
