First, if you haven't seen this movie before, don't read the back of the DVD case! For some reason I'll never understand, they give away a very important part of the movie in the description there.
Having stated that, this movie was made in the early 70's and still holds up extremely well, over 30 years later. Based on the novel by Thomas Tryon, the story centers around Holland and Niles, twins with a supernatural bond. The twins who portrayed them were truly exceptional, natural actors. The Other also stars Uta Hagen who is wonderful as Ada the grandmother, and Victor French who later appeared in Little House On The Prairie is Mr. Angelini. There's also a very young John Ritter as the twins' brother in law.
The acting is superb and the movie, set in 1930's rural Connecticut, manages to be dark and creepy even during a sunny summer. You get mystery, suspense, murder (without much gore), tragic "accidents," and it manages to be quite scary with very few special effects. The plotline stands on its own, but the setting and great acting make it a really good movie.
It's difficult to go into the plot very much without giving away anything, but just when you think you've figured out the secret, there's an even bigger one awaiting.
I highly recommend this movie, and I think you could probably watch it in the middle of a sunny afternoon and still be thoroughly creeped out by it.
