Welterweight world boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya may be the first of his profession to appear in the Billboard pop chart, hinting that there may indeed be life beyond his day job. He's got an acceptable pop voice (probably better than Jake La Motta's, anyway, though De La Hoya's acting ability remains untested), and the arrangements here cover both welterweight Anglo and Hispanic pop.
He beats the Bee Gees' "Run to Me" on points after a creditable three-minute tussle, and there's a hint of Santana rock crossover influence on "Para Amarte." Though his English vocals are slightly less confident than his Spanish, the lite FM slant to his material is overall a wise choice. One is only left wishing for a cover of Simon And Garfunkel's "The Boxer" to balance out the lighter songs here--and, after all, with all the pugilism-oriented songs throughout pop history, from Dylan's "Who Killed Davey Moore" to Survivor's "Eye Of the Tiger" Rocky III theme song, it's about time the boxing world had its own contender in the pop stakes.
