Orlimar is one of the best fairway woods of all time

This club is just simply breathtaking. You can hit this off a dead flat tight lie and pull off a brilliant shot. I have quite a few of these clubs lying around, and they are my favourite fairway woods of all time. I dare you to try this club, with the equivalent loft in a Titanium Brand name club. The face on the Orlimar TriMetal will usually hit further than the Titanium most times, because the sweet spot is basically the whole head, and the trimetal has a much more higher COR (coefficient of restitution) than Titanium.

Taylor made came out with the Rescue fairway models and the r7 and r5 fairways, cleveland with the launchers etc, but these Orlimar clubs can smack the ball so far down the fairway on a pure shot its just so good to watch. They have a small head, and with that, it places emphasis on the player having to connect well, and lets you get a clean shot on real tight lies, thrusting the ball further if its on hard tight lie.

The accuracy they give was so good that it made these clubs world famous. Unfortunately the promotions campaign behind Orlimar wasn't as good as the large names out there today, and thus these clubs are kind of left behind, but if you get the chance, try to hit one of these models. In particular, the Orlimar TriMetal is the best ever. Its like hitting the ball with an illegal club, but its simply because of the way the head is cast, with a slightly closed head, and a very low profile, that it allows a huge swing to come off with very little error.

They produce very long and stopping shots, which (when hit fairly straight) will stop within 2 - 5 yards of landing on the green from 200 yards out. I would definately recommend this club to people that slice the ball, or have a fade, as it should do wonders in correcting the problem. The reason I say this, is that the larger and more forgiving fairwar models are very hard to see what is happening once they have been swung, but with this smaller low profile head, you can tell and feel straight away what you are doing wrong.

The greatest thing about these models are that they are a little old now, and can be picked up for an absolute steal now, and in my opinion they hit further than most new models, that you are paying for the brand name anyway.

The lofts came in many models, but to be honest, I wouldn't recommend the driver too much, but definately try the 13 degrees, 16 degrees or the 19/21/23 depending on what you're after. The driver with its very low profile however, CAN BE USED OFF THE DECK if you are a very good player, and you will be rewarded with a very low flying strong fairway shot. But its not a common shot, and best to avoid unless you have high soft grass with a need for pure distance, and only for social golf if you're just showing off to your mates, because its a rather difficult shot to pull off and definately not worth your percentages when an easy lofted club is recommended.

All in all, because of the low profile, and the three types of metals in the face which actually hits further than titanium, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS.

I hope this review helps.

  Olimar- Try it-You'll like it

I have played golf 30+ years and have tried and also made many woods. I find the Olimars to be the easiest to hit of all. The 22 degree and 27 degree clubs are especially beneficial to golfers od all levels. I highly reccommend all players to carry at least one of these in their bag.

  Orlimar TriMetal Fairway Clubs
Review created: 11/25/07

I have played the original Orlimar TriMetal fairway clubs since shortly after they came out. I have four in my bag right now: 27, 23, 19, and 15 degrees. I have also owned 11, 13, and 21 degree models. Although I have found the 13, and especially the 11 degree, clubs harder to get airborne, I have found no better fairway club, including the new hybrids, for hitting high fairway shots from tight and normal fairway lies. I understand that even a handful of tour players still have at least one TriMetal in their bags (this review is being written in November 2007). When the club is used with knowledge of its weaknesses (discussed below) the TriMetal is simply one of the best fairway clubs available for the amateur golfer - and the price is far, far less than you have to pay for the newest clubs.

My TriMetals are all getting old and I have tried many of the new hybrids (e.g., Nickent, Nicklaus, Adams, Srixon, Bobby Jones, Taylor Made Burner, and Callaway) in an attempt to take advantage of the new technology but I have always come back to the TriMetals.

TriMetals are very light weight and easy to swing. You can obtain excellent clubhead speed with a smooth swing. I suspect the club would also be an excellent choice for mid to low handicap female players. I have even had to try to keep the overall weight of my irons light so that they do not feel too different from the TriMetals.

Jesse Ortiz, the clubmaker/designer of the original Orlimar TriMetals, left Orlimar after designing the TriMetals (he is the designer of the very expensive and excellent Bobby Jones clubs now). Orlimar clubs made subsequent to Ortiz's departure, the TriMetal II and the TriMetal Plus and even the later copies of the original TriMetals made by Orlimar itself, have just not been able to reproduce the flight and feel of the original TriMetals. It is also very hard to know whether the TriMetal you buy is an original or one of those made in later years. For me the originals have a softer feel and a lighter feeling head. They are usually very worn, with sky marks on the top. The faces, however, are usually in very good shape despite extensive use. The shafts on the later TriMetals are normally the same as those on the originals. The later TriMetal heads, however, feel heavier and feel harder when hit. I suspect there has been a very slight change in head material. The later TriMetals do not appear to have been made by the company until years after the success of the original TriMetals and the less than equal accomplishments, or sales, of the TriMetal II or TriMetal Plus. If you are buying a club listed as a TriMetal about all you can do is ask the seller how long he has had the club or, if the seller is a dealer, if the seller knows when the club was made.

Having said all that I should add that the later TriMetal clubs are still excellent clubs. The potential buyer should, however, recognize the weaknesses of all TriMetal models. All TriMetals share the weakness of being a poor choice from the rough. They tend to go right under the ball from fluffy lies. This is the reason I carry one deeper-faced hybrid. Most people also tend to tee the ball too high when using a TriMetal from the teeing ground. This, and hitting the club from anything other than very short rough, leads to the sky marks that are so prevalent on these clubs.

Overall, the TriMetal is an excellent, inexpensive used fairway club suitable for most players.

  Orlimar Trimetal Fairway Woods

When you get a solid hit with these it is like the wall has wings!! They are very easy to hit and have a sweet feel. They make a 26 degree 9 wood for the high handicapper, who has difficulty with the longer irons. I tried the 10 degree driver, however, and it just doesnt have the same feel, and was no where near as good as the fairway woods, so I would not recommend it. There are so many choices of loft, that it can get a bit confusing...Stick with the 13, 18, and 22 degree clubs in my opinion...thats equivalent to a strong 3 wood, strong 5 wood, and 7 wood. You can get these for a bargain on Ebay, usually under $30 a club...Good Luck!!

You might want to look into one of these.

I have been using Orilmar fairway woods almost since they came out. They were one of the first to offer them and they did a good job. If you want to try a fairway wood without spending the bucks on a brand new whiz bang last one out of the chute, this is the way to go.

It takes awhile to get used to using these as they have a very shallow face but once you get the hang of it you will be amazed at how well you can hit them. The TriMetal II version has a little more height to the face and I plan on picking up a couple of them to try but for now these are working for me. I have several of them in different degrees and shaft flex and bought most of them right here on E-bay. Normally, you won't have to pay much more than about 20 to 25 bucks for one and they are worth every penny.

  making a comeback

This is making a comeback! Every where I go I'm finding very thin fairways and it's hard to get a "normal" FW to get it off the ground. You need a low center of gravity. Well, this club could get under a bug on concrete! I recently bid on a 15* and when it got past the $100.50 I bid, I gave up. Can you believe it? People want this club.I have a 13* that I can hammer of the deck and it is also great off the tee into the wind. Keeps me in play when the wind is quartering hard.I got it for $14.99! Seems the 15* is the most in demand. Start looking in your basement, you might find one and be able to fill your tank for 2 days on that $100.00!!

I love the feel of the club at address. It is one of the most solid hitting clubs on the market. I find the distance per shot is very consistant, even for an amature.

  Fairway Classic

The classic design by Jesse Ortiz became a tour favorite for good reason. If you're a good ball striker this club will perform as well as anything out there today. Find one in good condition and all you'll want to consider is your favorite shaft and a new grip.

  Orlimar Fairway Woods
Review created: 12/11/07

I was more interested in the 15 degree wood than the 11 degree, but they were sold as a set. The fifteen degree works great for pounding balls out of deep rough. It doesn't get caught in the high grass as an iron would do and, depending on the thickness of the rough, will travel about 180 to 200 yards. It has a higher trajectory than a long iron, so the ball will stop quicker when it hits the green, making it useful from the fairway as well.

  Orlimar is the fairway wood
Review created: 01/02/07
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I palyed golf for 8 years. I was good with irons, driver and later hybrid clubs. But I could never hit a fairway wood until I started to try on 22* Orlimar. Now I can hit fairway woods(all are original Orlimar Trimetals) quite well and lowered my handicap. With its low profile, weight in the bottom and maraging face, Orlimar is the fairway wood for everyone.

I brought this club to have something long from the fairway. this club is great from the tee and fairway but the thing face can sometimes be hard to hit consistantly. I am a 20 handicapper and good shots were good but you get little forgivness on bad shots

  ORIGINAL TRIMETAL.... SIMPLY, THE BOMB!
Review created: 07/10/09

MY FIRST GOLF CLUB WAS A 7.5* TRIMETAL DRIVER. SURVIVED THROUGH 4 BROKEN SHAFTS BEFORE I RETIRED IT. THE HEAD ITSELF IF INDESTRUCTIBLE. I USUALLY HAVE 3 OR 4 DIFFERENT LOFTS LAYING ABOUT TO MAKE SURE I ALWAYS HAVE A SPARE.

NO OTHER CLUB FEELS, LOOKS & SOUNDS LIKE IT. THE SOUND OF A WELL STRUCK SHOT WITH THESE CLUBS ARE DIVINE! NO TINNY, CAR CRASH NOISE LIKE A LOT OF THE NEWER CLUBS.

ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE CLUBS. CHEAP, EASY TO HIT & VIRTUALLY INDESTRUCTIBLE.

UNFORTUNATELY, MOST OF THEM LOOK BEAT UP, SO MANY PEOPLE DISMISS THEM WITHOUT GIVING IT A CHANCE. I'M PLANNING TO RE-PAINT A FEW & LIST THEM. HOPEFULLY, MORE PEOPLE WILL TRY THEM OUT THEN, BECAUSE THEY'RE MISSING OUT.

  Old design, still the best.
Review created: 08/29/08
by:

The Orlimar Trimetal plus fairway woods are an old design, but they are still one of the best woods out there. I hit this 14 degree three wood better than anything on the market today. With a shallow face and a low CG, it gets the ball up in the air quickly for a long, straight ball flight. The True Temper EI-70+ is the perfect companion to this 3 wood. All around, you can't beat this club considering the tiny price tag these days.
