The Ordinary Parent's Guide To Teaching Reading by Jessie Wise, Sara Buffington (2004, Paperback)

I purchased this book (from Ebay)! and the corresponding flashcards to teach my 5 year old how to read. It is scripted, so I know exactly what to say and the lessons are well organized (though numerous(231)! This is a no frills, basic phonics approach to reading instruction. I needed something that was fun and easy and didn't take too much time out of my already busy day. We spend 10-20 minutes per day 4 times a week, which is just right for the attention span of a five year old! It is multi-sensory, and starts with beginning vowel sounds through words on a fourth-grade level.

I checked it out at the library and liked it so I decided to purchase it. My kindergarten son is far beyond anyone his age when it comes to reading, and I believe it is because of the easy to do reading lessons from this book. It tells you as the parent exactly what to say to the child and gives them words and stories to read. Very practical, very easy, and doesn't take very long at all to do a lesson.
