Publisher's Note In the winter, Taiga lives and goes to school in Fairbanks, Alaska. But when summer comes, he and his family travel to the North Pacific Ocean of Southeastern Alaska. Every day, Taiga's mom and dad work hard on their boats, fishing for salmon. They are surrounded by abundant and amazing wildlife. Sea lions try to steal salmon off the fishing lines; porpoises race alongside the boats; Taiga and his little brother delight in meeting up with their favorite sea otter. And one day, the family has an unforgettable encounter with orcas, or killer whales, who remind them that the natural world can be powerful and scary.
Industry Reviews "A significant amount of information about marine animals and the fishing industry is woven throughout Taiga's narration, but his choice of family stories and details of life afloat in the coastal waters provide plenty of action to engage primary grade listeners." Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books - Elizabeth Bush (09/19/1997)
