Everyone (old enough to play it) should own this game. For anyone who used to play Team Fortress Classic on the PC - This game picks up right where it left off! It even has some familiar maps like 2Fort. The gameplay is flawless and the animation is awesome. I was skeptical at first of the new graphics, but after 10 seconds of gameplay, I was convinced that Valve knew what they were doing all along. The sound effects are familiar as well as the fun factor we all remember!! I forgot how much fun Team Fortress is!!

Anyone who didn't get to play Half-Life 2 on the PC that utilized an awesome graphics card will finally get to see what the graphics are supposed to look like. I played Half-Life 2 on the xbox and, while fun, it suffered in the graphics arena. I haven't even started playing Episode 1 or 2 yet, simply because I want to fully appreciate Half-Life 2 all over again even though I completed it on xbox.

Portal looks amazing and will keep you coming back, it is super challenging and innovative as well. I can already imagine the clones that will attempt to copy it.

If you love first person shooters, then you probably already have this one on your list, but if you've never been into them, then this is the title for you.

For the money, this box set is a steal. Do yourself a favor and get this game! It is an instant classic and people will be playing this one online for years to come!! Enjoy !!!

The Orange Box (Xbox 360) 3 Games In One Box!
Review created: 07/21/09
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Valve, how I love their creative ways of dragging people to buying their products.
The Orange Box is a must have among Half-life loving fans. I was given Half-life 2 (Xbox version) for my birthday from one of my friends. I heard that Half-life 2 was a great game, and being that the xbox 360 is supposedly backwards compatible with xbox games, Half-life 2 being one of them. I was rudely awakened that it was not, but would run really slow lag in places and just be a straight out pain to play. When I was looking for a solution I stumbled upon The Orange Box. I bought my copy, started play amazed at the shadowing and great texture of this improved version of Half-life 2. The game never lagged once or even stuttered. I've played the game countless times, enjoying every drop of it. The Orange Box is not just Half-life 2 though, it's a whole pack of Valve gifts starting with Half-life 2, Half-life 2 episode 1, Half-life 2 episode 2, Team fortress, and Valves recent arcade game Portal.
This huge selection is remarkably one of the best deals you can ever get, a brand new copy of The Orange Box is only $19.99 at retail stores.

List Of Games:

Half-life 2: Gordan Freeman a scientist who graduated from MIT has to fight himself out of countless trials from headcrabs, Zombies, Combines, and other very thrilling and incredibly exciting events. I don't want to spoil the story.

Half-life 2 Ep. 1: A continuation of Half-life 2, not much to say without ruining the story.

Half-life 2 Ep. 2: A continuation of Half life 2 Ep. 1, not much to say without ruining the story.

Team Fortress 2: This is a multiplayer only game that has various game modes. I don't know very much about it, I've only played 1-2 matches, I've been busy playing other games.

Portal: Valve has really done a good job on this game, it has a slight learning curve and requires some thinking to complete. I played through all the way and was very satisfied at the end. The basic story is your a test subject and you complete various mission and you use a device called a portal gun which makes portals to other parts of the room. The game can get rather tricky on the other hand some people will find it extremely easy but at the same time satisfying.

RATING SYSTEM:

Graphics: 9.5/10
There are some great visual effects in this Box, the array of games have different styles but taking from Half-life 2 mainly, I'd say Valve didn't skip any steps.

Sound: 9.5/10
The sound is great, and adds great clarity to the selection of games. You can make out what everyone is saying in all games and other fainter details like the sound of a bullet shell hitting the ground.

Story: 10/10 Through all the games I'd say personally that all of them were great, except for Team Fortress since it has no story.

Character Development: 7.5/10
Half-life 2, HL 2 Ep. 1, HL 2 Ep. 2, and Portal all had pretty decent character development, but since it's a video game there's more action then character development.

Controls: 9.5/10
All the controls throughout the games where great except for Half-life 2, when your driving any the buggy, or water craft, you use the left stick to accelerate and steer. I personally like having the right trigger to accelerate, but Valve didn't include anyway of changing this control setting.

Total: 9.5/10

The Orange Box is a great box to get, it has a total of 3 different games.
Valve has really put what they wanted for their fans, they've really out done themselves!

  The stories are true...

The Orange Box is praised as being the greatest gaming deal in existence. This is easily 100% true. Valve is one of the best developers when it comes to construction, care for the community, and overall bang for your buck.
THE GAMES:
The Half Life 2 package is equal to it's PC version and has also been on the top of many video game lists for years. Super story and classic.
Portal, though short, is a brillianty created game and completely original.
Lastly there is Team Fortress 2. This game is the only multiplayer game in the package (no splitscreen). TM2 has a huge following on the PC which is totally deserved. It's art style is fantastic and it proves to be a wildly fun and strategic game. It sets itself apart from shooters such as Halo and Call Of Duty with it's creative class system and mission based maps. HOWEVER, let it be known that as of right now the console version is no way close to being as in depth as the PC version. Valve sports a very huge mod community with it's PC games. Add all of this modified user created content to the many Valve updates (new weapons and official maps) and you've got yourself a huge package. A huge package the consoles DO NOT support. In fact there have been no Orange Box updates yet (years after It's release). We're all hoping for it but as of now there is no news. So keep in mind that the game, though amazing, Isn't as amazing as It Is on the PC and for that reason (unfortunately) isn't as popular on the consoles.

  Good but not excellent

I only bought the game because of portal because I'm a type of guy that likes to solve puzzles. I would give portal a 10/10 because it is fun and an ingenious way to approach puzzles. I'm not much of a half-life fan because it is really repetitive. To me, it seems like all that you do is run around and kill things. Sure the game is scary at points, but overall it's decent. If you're into shooting games then this is a must by because it comes with a 4 in 1 deal. One of which is playable online. As far as the achievements go, they aren't to difficult to achieve but most of them require time. Graphics are very well done, just a few glitches here and there. As for the story, i really can't say much since i didn't follow it.

  5 GAMEs in 1!

Let's sum this review up:
5 Games in 1! Ok 3 are very similar. 3 UNIQUE Games in 1!
Half Life 2 is a classic at this point and won tons of awards. Even if you've beaten it like I have, there's still new content with the new episodes and even incentive to experience the main quest again to unlock achievements. Portal is one of the most unique game experiences I've had recently and Team Fortress 2 is a very balanced and fun multiplayer experience.

Gameplay: 10/10
Pros: With 5 games there has to be one that you find yourself drawn to the most. For me, that's Portal and Team Fortress 2, but you may be a more story driven Half-Life 2 person. The controls are solid (and pretty similar) across all the games and the gameplay is extraordinary. In fact, my only complaint with the whole package is that there's plenty of Half-Life 2 action and not nearly enough Portal and Team Fortress. Portal is over way too fast and Team Fortress could use some more maps, but is wanting more really a fault?

Graphics: 9/10
Pros: Team Fortress 2 looks so sick! I love the cell-shaded/cartoon/looney tunes look. The animation is also absolutely top-notch. Team Fortress really steals the show in the graphics dept. Portal is truly an impressive technical feat and I still can't entirely fathom how it all works...incredible. The Half Life 2 series still has fantastic facial animations.
Cons: Half Life 2 is showing its age somewhat but it is a 3 year old game.

Sound/Music: 8/10
Pros: Fantastic voicework throughout all the games with good sound effects and the classic Half Life mood music.
Cons: There is not nearly enough music and much of the time it feels vacant. While this is probably on purpose, it accentuates sound effects which can be annoying and loud.

Lasting Appeal: 10/10
Pros: 99 Achievements, 5 different games, 9 classes in multiplayer to master and hours upon hours of gameplay.
Cons: People may get bored with the Half-Life story/gameplay before finishing out everything. Only 6 maps in multiplayer.

Average: 92.50%
Tilt: +0.50%

Ultimately, you can't really NOT recommend this game. It is after all only $60 for 5 games. So maybe all 5 games aren't full fledged $60 titles, but they are all pretty substantial and Half-Life 2 for Xbox was $50 only a few years ago. It's a phenomenal deal and as long as you don't hate games from the First Person Perspective, you'll find something to love in the Orange Box. The Orange Box is certainly one of the best game compilations ever.

Verdict: 93%

The Orange Box: 360's Best Game Yet?
Review created: 10/16/07
by:
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Of all the games available for Xbox 360, this is quite possibly the best. Here's a quick rundown of the 5 games included in The Orange Box:

Half-Life 2 (and following Episodes)

I am a big fan of Halo, Gears of War and the Tom Clancy games, but I have to say that Half-Life 2 and the following episodes are right up there with these classics - and maybe even better. The graphics are top-notch, the gameplay scenarios are always changing and it has great action intermixed with some tough strategy and problem solving; its one of those games that makes the controller hard to put down. Also, any of you old farts who enjoyed the original 1998 Half-Life on PC will definitely get a kick out of this game - in this case, the sequel is better.

On a side note, for anyone that has a home-theater system, this is the first game I've played that takes full advantage of 7.1 surround. Try not to wake up the neighbors.

Team Fortress 2

The first I heard about the Box was from a football game commercial. I saw the graphics for this multiplayer and became skeptical. But after playing Team Fortress, I stood corrected...it appears that the developers knew what they were doing after all. For fans of class-based multiplayers (like Shadowrun) TF2 alone is worth the $60. Just try to practice a bit before going into ranked games on Xbox Live - the competition is intense. Again, anyone who played the original TF back in the day will love this update.

Portal

Here is the oddball of the group. Portal is like no other game available for 360...it is a strategy-based multiplayer game that involves a huge amount of problem solving. Like TF2, this game is built for multiplayer, so get ready to take on the competition.

All in all, The Orange Box is (in my humble opinion) the best game out there. Aside from the fact that its an incredible bargain, the graphics of all games are pristine, the sound is superb and each one is hard to put down. Now we just need this so-called "Counterstrike" game to be released on 360 - if its as good as these games, I'll be first in line.

I feel that this game is a little overrated. But dont get me wrong I still love this game. The graphics, story, characters, and the whole feel of it is just great. Maybe not the "best game ever/of the century" people say it is... and I'm a huge fan of first person shooters!

Still all three half lifes are great. Portal is very challenging and works your mind. I didnt like team fortress.

Great snag for about $10!

The most fun game in the Orange Box is Half Life 2 because there are zombies and cops and elite soliders you will have to deal with. You will have alies as well you play as man named Gorden Freeman. To be clear on gameplay Half Life is a first person shooter. If you are a hard core gamer like me or a zombie agent gamer then this game is worth buying.

  The Orange Box (XBOX360)
Review created: 10/10/09

This is one of the best video game packages to ever be created. HL2 is a masterpiece of a first person shooter and enters you into a disturbing state of alien controlled earth as a result of Gordon Freeman's actions in the original half life. The sequel to that HL2 Episode 2 is just as visceral, and the extra bonus of HL: Episode 1 is high quality too.

Portal is by far the most original game of its kind and hits the mark perfectly. It is a first person puzzle shooter with a unique concept that will test your skills and sense of reality.

Team fortress classic is good, but there seems to be a lack of other users for this multiplayer only game to be a huge success anymore.

The orange box is quite possibly the best there is for anything. Actually, I have it on all three consoles (xbox 360, ps3, and the PC) because I can't get enough of it. If you don't have this game, you must have it. That's not even a demand, it's an expectation. If you own a PS3 or xBox, you must have this game. Simple. Sucks for Wii owners who don't have tis game, but at least they can play it on their PCs.

Review created: 09/28/09

I was a fan of the original Half-Life game on pc and Counterstrike. I finally broke down and bought this title and just finished Half Life 2, working on Episode 1. I finished Portal (not the advanced maps yet) and have been playing a ton of TF2. You will find yourself stuck playing this game for a very long time. I have one complaint, and that is TF2. I have since recently joined the community and found that they have been promising updates to TF2 for 2 years now and nothing ever came out. Main reason, or excuse given has to do with the size of the patch being close to a gig, and MS doesn't want them giving away stuff for free. Well just to get the game to work with new NET changes and RAM changes they said the patch would be at least a gig, and M$ wants to charge for a friggin patch! Look at Burnout Paradise, they have a 1.9 game change patch for over a gig, so what gives? Anyway, I still hope one day they can patch it and add the new class changes + extra maps. L4D is next on my list when I am Orange Boxed out.

  Great Game!!!
Review created: 09/03/09

It's long, has various games on it, but best of all, IT'S JUST GREAT!! It has everything from a great storyline to free movement to varying environment, interesting creatures of all types of genres, etc. It just has EVERYTHING. And you can make it as easy or hard as you like depending on how good you are. There's really no downside that I could think of unless you don't like first person games (I'm fairly certain there's no third-person option).
