How Is It That Two Young Musician’s (Ben Goldwasser & Andrew VanWyngarden) Both In Their 20s, Can Be So In Touch With The Rhythms, Melodies,& Overall Feel Of The Great Music From The 60s & 70s?

A Term Has Been Used Lately To Describe Some New Music & I Never Thought It Was Appropriate....But The Term "Future Classic"....Is MGMT!....There Are No Others!...Not Only Do I Think In The Future This Band Will Be Referred To As Classic..But Also Classic In That Presently They Take You To Another Time & Place.....If You Are Into Bands Like, The Beatles, Hall & Oates, Supertramp, David Bowie, T.Rex, Then You'll Know What I Mean When You Hear "Oracular Spectacular" ,& Yet Their Music Is Fresh, & Within The Modern Rock Era, I Think Their Sound Is Timeless.

I Can't Even Express How Much I Love This Band. Being A Fan Of Music For 40+ Years Its Not Often That I've Felt Compelled To Write A Statement Of This Kind. The Reason's I've Always Loved Music Are Represented By MGMT.I Think, To Hear Of This Album & Not Buy It, Is A Missed Opportunity To Feel Good Many Times Over. There Is So Much More I Could Say, But I'll Spare You...

If I Found Out Someone Couldn't Buy The CD For Themself, I Would Buy One For Them!.......Craig Johnson

  Psychedelic
Review created: 01/04/10

Oracular Spectacular is the love child of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, who met in college and became fast friends based on their love of music. Most of the tracks are drug fueled and trippy, which works for the synth heavy electronic beats. MGMT may not be for everyone, but they hit the mark when they try for "a futuristic band playing music from the 70s". Some songs like "Kids" and "Electric Feel" are definetly more electro then "Weekend Wars".

  Oracular not-so-Spectacular
Review created: 11/18/09

"Electric Feel," "Kids," and "Time to Pretend" are great songs. Those three songs deserve five stars. The rest of the cd is not super great. I can see what they were trying to do. It is a psychedelic album with a 70's feel. Like I said, I love those three songs, the rest of the album, not so much.

I liked the funky hippy type music on the cd. I decided to buy it because of the song Kids. Plus, I heard a couple of the other songs on Utube, so I purchased the item.

MGMT is an exciting, very musical group that takes advantage of the keyboard and electronics. Lead vocals has an amazingly unique voice that gets me pumped! Very good Band/Album!

  Funky, groovy, spiky
Review created: 04/10/08

I bought this on the strength of hearing a 20 second excerpt of 'Time to Pretend' (track 1) because I thought it sounded a bit out of the ordinary. I have now played the album so much that to me it feels like one of those albums that help define a time in my life - a classic - and I love it. Everyone else I've played it to doesn't get it - it's love it or loathe it.

The earlier tracks are (over?)produced funky tunes that will feel familiar yet fresh to those who appreciate mid-late seventies disco. Half way through the album it changes to a more (to my ear) late sixties-early seventies trippy, hippy style groove but still with a slightly spiky edge.

Track 2 is my least favourite and when I listen start to finish to the whole album the last couple of tracks do sound less co-ordinated to me than the rest. Some of the lyrics make me feel about a hundred years old and are definitely on the youthful side of meaningful, however, I'm not hearing too much else around that is similar so that's a good thing.

If you like the Mika/Scissor Sisters style idiosyncratic, overblown retro thing then give it a try. Bland it ain't.
