Oppo Digital DV-980H DVD Player

Oppo has a very good reputation for making quality stuff and after buying the DV-980H I see why. Not only does it upconvert SD DVD's to near HD quality, it's sound quality for CD's, SACD's, and DVD-A's is unsurpassed in this price range. The unit I bought was a refurb for about $35 less than new retail but it performs like brand new. You should definitely consider adding one of these to your home theater.

This is an exceptionally nice DVD player, with the huge benefit of top quality and artifact-free (unlike Philips and others) up-conversion from existing material to full HD content. I use this to play both existing DVDs and AVI/DIVX files, and the results are amazing on my 52" Panasonic Viera plasma. The unit's USB port is a huge convenience (content must be FAT32 formatted) to easily play divx or avi files, and I remain amazed at the quality of the up converted output, and the range of supported files. The only thing this player could have added to make it better would have been an ethernet port to tie into my home network for file sharing, notwithstanding that, I just have to give it a 10. You won't be disappointed. This player is just amazing, and I haven't even tried the DVD audio features yet!

First and foremost, I am a past OppoDigital customer. I was amazed at the quality of their 970HD unit. I sent them an email as I wanted to know what unit would be best on my 1080i tv set...they told me that this one would be best for the 1080i sets and was pleased that they didn't automatically push the most expensive model.

They release firmware updates as needed and that's a big plus for future support of new features and bug fixes (if they have them).

The remote is very easy to use and laid out well. It's one of the better remotes compared to that of the other few remotes I have for other devices.

The picture quality is fabulous and love the automatic formatting between 4:3 content and widescreen content. I dislike having 4:3 content stretched and would rather watch it normally. The options give you the options for the unit to automatically detect and display content. It's very handy although they warn you using this mode on CRT and Plasma tvs...I use it on my CRT/970HD unit and haven't had any burn in problems.

Oppo is like a great little secret...most people may have never heard of them; but those that find their products, stay with them from here on out!

The build quality is nice and picture quality is pretty good. Upconverting works, but depending on the movie, there can be minimal to lots of noise and artifacts. I have mine hooked up to a 46" Samsung LCD HDTV and most movies look great, but the new Batman movie Dark Knight is very noisy and doesn't look very good. Maybe this has something to with the DVD compression. And once in a while, subtitles appear messed up on movies.

But overall, this player is a nice stepping stone to a BluRay player.

The quality of this unit is great. Picture on our 42" plasma is better than DirectTV HD. Have no regretts purchasing this DVD player. Replaced a Zenith DVD upconvertor and there is a huge difference in picture quality.

If your experience with audio and video gear is limited to what's carried in the big box stores, you've probably never heard of Oppo. I hadn't until I began doing research on up-converting DVD players, and the reviews convinced me to give the Oppo DV-980H a try. I've had it almost a month now, and I'm very pleased with it. The picture it produces from a standard DVD is not quite as good as, say, Blu-Ray, but on my 34" Sony set (an HD-capable model) it's noticeably better than what I got from my old Toshiba. If you own a huge TV (60" screen or larger) you might want to go with a Blu-Ray player, but for someone like me who has a fairly large library of DVDs and a 34" set, the Oppo 980H is just the ticket.

After reading many positive reviews on the net and E Bay I decided to buy an Oppo 980H DVD Player. After several weeks of use I could not be happier. The picture and sound quality is unsurpassed. The packaging is very stylish and secure. The service from Oppo was outstanding. I sent over a couple of questions about set up and had an answer almost immediately. I would highly recommend this player to anybody. It is the BOMB !!!!!

This product was just as described. excellent product and I recommend if you are an audiophile or just like to take full advantage of CD recordings that are available in SACD or DVD-A.
If you do research on this product I dont think you will find any negative comments. I didnt. I researched this product for quite a while before buying it. This product also plays MP3,which I couldnt tell for sure in the documentation, but I loaded one of mine and it did play. It doesnt do BluRay or HD DVD, and it does make this clear in the documentation. I wasnt buying it for the Video aspect. just for audio. So it worked for me.
If you have HDMI input on your receiver its an easy hookup. I hooked mine up to my Yamaha RX-V463 Receiver,which has the HDMI input.
I have listened to two SACDs that I have purchased. Pink Floyd "Darkside of the Moon." and Elton John "Goodbye Yellowbrick Road". Amazing sound quality and seperation. there are different instruments coming through the seperate channels. Its a whole new experience in listening pleasure with albums I have listened to 100's of times!!
I highly recommend this Oppo DV-980 DVD player. for the quality and price you cannot be sorry!

The Oppo DV-980H is absolutely the best performance per dollar DVD/SACD/DVD-audio player in the industry. I replaced my $2000 Denon unit because the Oppo allowed me to send high-resolution audio out through the HDMI. Now the Audyssey system in my preamp/processor can finally correct my room acoustics while I'm listening to SACDs and DVD-audio discs!

DVD Player is top quality overall. However, it works best in a specific application. It really shines if you have a dedicated theater with a separate scaler and deinterlacer(Lumagen, etc)since it does not have the best deinterlacer and scaler inside. This player will output 480i over HDMI (hardly any will do that). Thus you can output the native DVD content over HDMI to another scaler and do the deinterlacing and scaling there. This is as good as an SDI input costing hundreds more. Other features that lend itself to a dedicated home theater:

1) you can blank out the front panel lights for a dark environment.
2) you can design your own home screen when the player starts up. neat!
3) it has an audio-only mode to turn off video for CDs.
4) it has a higher quality jpeg encoder so 1080 jpegs don't have to be scaled down to 480 and then back up to 1080. The jpegs look MUCH improved on the big screen.
5) it has a USB port. Plugging in a thumb drive with photos means instant slide show with high quality 1080 imaging.

I would not buy this DVD player as an upconverting player though (Oppo sells better ones at this price point). There are others that use better deinterlacing chipsets (Faroudja, eg) than this one. But for a theater with a dedicated deinterlacer it's FANTASTIC!

Great upconvert DVD player. It does everything I thought it would and more.
Menus are easy to use. Works very well at 1080i on my Toshiba rear projection Cinema Series.

OPPO has another loyal follower.

I'm in transition with my home video entertainment system, moving toward Hi Def TV and Blu Ray. This unit takes standard definition disks and upgrades them a bit. I saw this purchase as a step along the way.

Repeat client! For the money, this is the best DVD play on the market. The first one I purchased was after lots of research after purchasing my first lcd TV, I started watching movies I'd watch on my other DVD player and was amazed by what I was seeing for the first time. When I purchased my second lcd flat panel, the first thing I did was jump on e-bay to find this seller (OPPO) and purchased the second one. Comes with all the connections (I purchased a HDMI cable seperately)

I am far from an expert in electronics so I read several reviews about this player, as well as others, and this was the model that fit my budget. The player is terrific! I bought it specifically for a new flat screen LCD Samsung television, and it has performed beyond expectations. I bought a refurbished model from OPPO and the shipping, packaging and communication was better than first rate.

I bought the NewPhone 74205 three weeks ago and was immediately impressed with the number of features available on this inexpensive phone. It has a 1M-pixel camera, video camera, and speakerphone. The NewPhone's size is perfect for carrying in a pocket and the battery has a pretty good lifespan of roughly 4 hours. My only complaint is that the menu system on the phone makes you click four times before you can find someone in the address book, set an alarm, or perform a additional functions. Other phones I've owned have simpler menus and get you to important features easily. Overall, I'd recommend the phone if you're on a budget.

It plays every file type, has composite and HDMI outputs, and the level of control on how it operates is fantastic. I couldn't be happier.
