Excellent bang for the buck

I just purchased this unit substituting a previous Denon model. After searching around, I was a little skeptical about the but (Onkyo has really never been an upper tier brand) but so many good reviews for this unit and others from their line meant I had to try it.
Firstly sound quality is SPECTACULAR for this price. I am using a 5.1 bookshelf speaker system from Energy and sounds with movies and music are wonderful. True audio separation is noticed with DVD's and music is very well balanced, from electronic to rock and even new age and instrumental.
My zone 2 is using a pair of Bose 201 speakers, since they're far away from the sub. I was a little disappointed that there was no "speaker B" for this unit when I initially purchased it, since I really wanted to use this to hear the same music the receiver is in. To my pleasant surprise, the zone 2 has a "source" option, which basically let's you use this as a speaker B assignment, the only negative is you can't turn off the speakers from the other room, but I have no problems with this.
Automatic calibration is great and different from my Denon system which asks for a single listening position, this calibration requests 3 listening positions. I've seem mixed reviews on the Audyssey sound processing, but personally I find it really good and not exaggerated in my configuration. Also good for sound is the night mode, which allows for me to watch movies or play games without the loud thuds from my sub later in the evening "flattens" out the sound a bit.
Oh, and one thing I haven't mentioned... THIS THING HAS 6 HDMI PORTS!! This is fantastic, and is on par or above more expensive receivers. Really simple input assignment and even allowing you to change the display name on the small screen on the front of the unit as well as your TV. One other plus is that when you control the receiver, it displays on your TV. So if you're raising or lowering the volume on a movie, this appears on the screen.
Only downside is the GUI, which is quite poor looking. However it gets the job done. I'd personally prefer if it would've been like similar Pioneer units, especially for the iPod dock, but then again I have an AppleTV and don't expect to ever dock my iPod directly to the receiver.
