  Excellent Receiver but poor manual

This is an excellent receiver with 7.1 channel home theater system in its price range. SR606 also have 4 HDMI 1.3a inputs which is must these days with all HDTV viewing we do. Other standard features include AM/FM radio, Sirius Satellite Radio Ready. Like many receiver in this category, it has its own Audyssey 2EQ for Loudness Correction, which is a great feature for sound adjustment based on room size. Another cool feature is HDMI 1080i up scaling powered by Faroujda DCDi Edge. With one remote you can handle receiver as well as TV, DVD player, cable box etc. It also has a feature, zone 2 listening, where you can put 2 speakers in some other room to listen to music.
The only drawback I have found so far is, when you use this for 5.1 speakers only. Since it has a 7.1 capability, there are 7+1 inputs for Front right, center, front left, subwoofer, surround right, surround left, surround left back and surround right back. Since I wanted to use only 5.1, I did all front, center and woofer. Now for the back, I connected wires to surround back left and surround back right, However it kept giving me speaker error, I tried many things (changing wires, speakers etc.) but it keep giving error. I called my speaker's company saying there is problem with wires. However even with new wires it keeps giving speaker error. I emailed onkyo but no reply even after 4-5 weeks (I finally have to call and wait for 15- 20 minutes to get an answer). After some extensive internet search, I found that you might have to use surround right and left for 5.1 speakers. It is not explained any where in the manual. SO IF YOU ARE USING ONLY 5.1 CONNECT FIRST SURROUND LEFT AND SURROUND RIGHT EVEN IF YOU PLACE THEM IN BACK. However you can use it as 6.1 as well as 7.1 speakers too. Although this a minor issue, it gave me a HARD time for one whole week. I hope this review help somebody with the same problem. Despite this drawback I still feels this is an excellent speaker.

I got this because i got tired of the multiple wires strewn across the room to the TV. with this i have one hdmi cable going to the tv, and everything else to this receiver. Awesome sound onkyo is known for, and you can save by using your old dvd player and upscaling to 1080i with this receiver, instead of buying a new upscaling player. I have a wii, uverse tv, and dvd player all being upscaled to 1080i thru this unit, and the pictures have never been better. Awesome unit, i plan on buying another for my other media room. Also a top-ranked unit over at avsforums.

i like eveything about this receiver and the seller is an excellent to buy from! It has all the features you need to enjoy. I am letting it drive a 5.1 Bose system and plan to update it to 7.1. Had a Kenwood Receiver and it was not even in the ball park with this system.

  Great Price
Review created: 03/06/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

For the price (I had a 10% off coupon) this is great. It seems to sense when the dvd player has Dolby Digital output or not. If it does not then the receiver defaults to something less, like Dolby Pro Logic II, I may have the name wrong here, but it seems pretty smart. I got the two extra speakers, I got Yamaha 150 (those outdoor speakers) and since there is no room behind the sofa I put them overhead and that works fine. The automatic set up is pretty nice. You just plug in the microphone, click once, then it does it's thing. You move the microphone and click again, once more and you are done. Go in to check if you want and you will see it has measured the speaker distance accurately. The sound is great. One slightly bad thing, is if you don't have HDMI hookup to your TV then you have to use the display on the 606 to see what the settings are. The owners manual seems pretty good, all English, not every other page having other languages. It is nice and heavy. I got some more banana plugs since the posts are sort of close together, not impossible to use, just close. I had to get a phono pre-amp since this has none. I got a fine phono pre-amp at Parts Express for $22. I found really nice solderless banana plugs at Menards, they are Monster Cable brand but still reasonably priced at <$2 each. The remote has buttons that are a bit small.

  Onkyo TX SR606

It is an incredible unit. I decided to buy a new receiver since the unit I have been using for the last 20 years had no surround sound capability. The receiver also did not have very good reception. The Onkyo is a very hi-tech unit that will serve me well into the future. It has so many features and it will take me quite awhile to explore all of its capabilities. I am very pleased with it.

Great Sound, Easy to Set Up!

This receiver is easy to set up. You open the box, hook up your speakers, and run the internal setup. It comes with a Mic you hook up to it and it detects the distance of your speakers to your ears. The sound is Crisp. The seller sold it to me as described, in its manufacturer's Box, and sealed. Brand New. I give this receiver an A++++

Setup and calibration were very easy and seemed to work great. Really a great receiver. Sound is awesome. I had a JVC unit before that was only two years old and cost more. No contest - the Onkyo easily outperforms it.

Up to date with all the HD codecs and plenty of HDMI connectivity. Great sound, Audyssey EQ makes speaker set-up a breeze, plus many, many more features...all at a very affordable price. No other receiver on the market right now will match this one for the price (even a slightly higher price range).

  Glad I'm back to Onkyo
Review created: 04/10/09

My first receiver I ever purchased was in 1986 and it was an Onkyo. 23 years later I bought another Onkyo after having Sony, Harmon Kardan, JVC, Pioneer, etc. The TX SR606 is the best receiver I've ever owned. Excellent for movies! You won't go wrong with Onkyo.

What a great receiver! I had a Yamaha receiver which was about five years old, so I updated to the Onkyo. What a difference! The Yamaha was good, but the Onkyo is great. When I hooked it up I could immediately hear the difference in the separation of the different channels. You won't be disappointed.

Much Better Than Entry-Level at a Very Reasonable Price
Review created: 04/07/09

Our new HDTV came with a really wimpy sound system. I paired the Onkyo TX-SR606 with some Klipsch speakers and voila! We have a room full of GREAT sound. I especially like the Audyssey automatic calibration and speaker setup feature which custom tailors the system to your specific room acoustics. I also enjoy being able to toggle through the various audio profiles on the fly. Someone who needs to brag that they spent thousands on a receiver and thousands more on speakers probably won't be happy with this particular receiver, but it works just fine for me!

Great Surround Sound Receiver...Very User Friendly
Review created: 03/10/09

I have been pleased with the Onkyo 606 receiver. Setup is easy, and it is extremely user friendly. It has settings for each of your components (DVD, VCR, GAME, Cable/Satellite, etc.) I love it!!! I have Klipsch Speakers hooked to it. This is probably the best receiver for the money.

  Qaulity product
Review created: 02/08/09

This Onkyo receiver has been an excellent additiona to my home theater system. Initial setup does take a couple of hours to learn all of the settings, but is generally straight forward. Once you get it setup and the speakers calibrated, you do not have to make adjustments again. I have my cable, and Blu-Ray sending to this receiver, with all the signals feeding the LCD TV. The HDMI hookups make everything easy to setup and easy to use. I am am very happy with this unit and highly recommend it.

  Onkyo 606 surround receiver
Review created: 02/05/09
by:

Outstanding! I moved from fairly expensive separates for the convenience of it, and I got more than convenience. The sound is far better than my old processor and amps could deliver, especially in surround mode.
One "problem" that had been reported on this piece was that it got to hot, and I will tell you that the people who have suggested that have never been around true high-end equipment. This piece does run warmer than the average receiver from Best Buy, but nothing extreme.
There is no receiver, or separates for that matter, that cost less than $5000.00 that I would choose over this Onkyo piece with a retail of approximately $1800.00

What is not to like! This is a great unit that was received in mint condition and has exceeded my expectations. One word of warning - plan to take lots of time reading the manual and playing with all the variations/setting/modes/etc. This is not a bad thing, in most cases it is a great thing but just know that you'll want to set aside lots of time to go through all the set up procedures and then all the combination of variables for each and every mode you will be using. I found tons of neat little things it could do that I never knew from reading the reviews and parts of manuals. Unless I miss my guess, that unit will take care of all my home theater/music needs for the next 10-15 years. If you can't tell, I'm thrilled with this unit. I've had Sony tuner amps in the past that have served me well but they were not nearly as feature rich as this Onkyo. So if the Onkyo gives me the kind a service that my old Sony's have, then I'll be happier than a pig in slop and I'm counting on the Onkyo to be trouble free. To help insure this, I've added new surge protected, filtered and battery backed AC power to my new AV rack, something that the old Sony's never had going for them.

  Onkyo SR606 7.1 channel Receiver
Review created: 01/05/09
by:

I have been looking to upgrade to a new receiver for about a year.
Did a ton of research and found this to be the most affordable and versitile.
It has 3 hdmi inputs along with an upconverter to 1080i, which is more than enough for any larger tv sets. It has true 7.1 outputs along with a zone 2 option...which then changes the output to 5.1 in zone 1 and a dedicated stereo channel to zone 2. I am very happy with my purchase and the quality of the unit is excelent.

Onkyo TX SR606 7.1 channel Receiver
Review created: 01/04/09
by:

This Onkyo AV receiver is an excellent mid-budget choice. The power per channel and 7.1 capability is outstanding for the price. This is the 5th Onkyo receiver that I have owned. They rate the channel output properly and Onkyo receivers can handle speaker impedences below 8 ohms. Many other popular brands have serious issues with low speaker impedence. The sound is excellent as is the input/output connectivity.
