The One Year Book of Hymns by Mark R. Norton, Robert K. Brown (1995, Paperback)

This is a really wonderful book that has a description of a hymn for each day of the year along with the story of how this hymn came about. Some of the most common hymns had such interesting stories and yet these are ones I have sung since a child and the first time I heard why and how the song came about.

Wish it had the music to go along with the hymn since some of these were ones I am not familiar with and would have liked to have played and sung along with. But it is the STORY of how the hymns came about, yet a daily reminder of how wonderful songs can be and how they tell stories to help us spiritually, mentally and morally - and yet chear us up at the same time. To me a good hymn is better than any psychiatrist when it comes to healing the "wellbeing" part of all of us.

This book brings new meaning to old hymns. I reviewed this book at a friend's house and thought it would be a great book to give a friend for her birthday. she loves old hymns. I just had to tear out the first page because it had been a gift to someone else .Otherwise the book was in great shape, looked like it had nver been read and my friend is enjoying the book immensely.

I bought this book because I play the harp and there is a seies of 5 volumes based on this book's hymn words. The book is wonderful because it gives many, and in some cases all the verses to hymns when other books only give one or two verses. There is a background on the each hymn as well as a prayer for the day. When used along with "A hymn a Day" vol. 1-5, harp music books, by Hugh Callison, it makes for wonderful praise, prayer, thanks, meditation, and worship time for yourself, your congregation, or others you are sharing the gospel with. Great book. Great prayer aid.
