One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus (1999, Paperback, Reprint)

We needed a good book for our book club one month, so I asked the BN lady and she said this was the best discussion book for book clubs. I see why! Had I just passed this book, on title and cover alone, I would have not purchased it. I'm so glad we read it. I was an awesome discussion with so much depth to it. The characters are amazingly formed and you really feel you are there and can relate to them. We as a group felt so proud and so empowered to be women after we read it! It was another interesting spin on american history. I really did not enjoy history in school but after reading some of these books in book club, I wish we had learned it this way. What a good read. Please, check out this book and be impressed!

I only listen to books on tape/cd becasue my eyesight is failing...Up to this point the Diana Gabaldon "outlander' series was my favorite...there are 6 books so far...with this ONE story..."One Thousand White Women" I was blown away..I listened to it twice from our library..MADE my hubby buy me a copy of my own for our 40th wedding anniversary and have listened to it twice more..lent it to my sister who LOVED it also..NOW my hubby and I are listening to it together..made him a fan also....ABSOLUTELY the BEST MONEY I HAVE EVER SPENT...totally recommend it to anyone who loves a wonderful tale with absolutely fantastic readers....still reeling and will listen to it again and again...Jim Fergus...YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was better than I expected! The author did a very good job with the descriptions of what it much have been like to live amongst the 'savages'. I was very disappointed with the ending. I would recommend this book to others. Our book club as a whole enjoyed the book.

Although the story is fiction built on an real idea it is done with the real possibility of what would have happened. Women of the time were institutionalized at the whim of a husband. The institutions were a horror for any woman let alone one that wasn't insade. Common reasons were that a woman did not obey the rules expected from society. So they were deemed insane. Women were incarcerated for crimes because they could not get jobs and often had to resort to theft or prostitution. The Civil war left many women alone and without finances. These were the women who made up the volunteer wives. They were scared and harshly treated. Some were tough enough to fight back. Most had no idea of what to expect from the native Americans and were surprised at some of the things they learned. It was an easy read in the form of a diary and letters to family that they knew would never see the letters but wanted some trace of their lives if they were killed or died.

I loved this book and have recommended it to several friends who also loved reading it. Altho it is fiction, I got insight to women's lives in another era. It is well written and had a good pace. I was sorry to see the book end

I love historical novels, and even though this wasn't based on what actually happened, it was so interesting to read how it might have transpired if the events had actually occurred. Because of the detail, actions of the characters, etc., it felt very real. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

This was the most interesting piece of literature I have picked up and read in a very long time. Although this novel is pure fiction one could almost imagine it happening. There were women and girls that were kidnapped by Indian braves alot during the time this book was to have taken place. So many of the things these women went through other women could very well have gone through. The main character, Mae Dodd, learns to be tough and savy in order to stay alive. Even though she is married to the Chief she still has to work hard every day. The weather is a curse, the summers are so terribly hot and dry and the winters bring blizzards of freezing rain and snow that almost cost Mae her life and that of her unborn child. Several of the women that have gone with this group of Indians have babies, some even twins. This book just caught my eye while I was in a bookstore one day. I did not want to pay the full price for it so I looked it up on half.com when I got home and got my copy that way. I have since sent that copy to my cousin half way across the country and purchased me another copy to keep in my library. I would recommend this wonderful book to anyone.

INITIALLY, I ONLY BOUGHT THIS BOOK BECAUSE OF THE COVER AND THE TITLE.

HOWEVER... I LOVED THIS BOOK.

I GREW UP ON A RESERVATION AND SO TO ME THE IDEA THE AUTHOR USED MADE TOTAL SENSE . I THOUGHT THE AUTHOR DID A REALLY GREAT JOB DEVELOPING HIS CHARACTERS. I READ THE WHOLE BOOK IN A MATTER OF 2 SITTINGS. I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN AND WAS SAD TO READ THE LAST PAGE.

Book was great reading. I'm in a book club and we choose this one. I liked the setting of the pioneer days and I flet the author did a great job writing from a female point of view.

Marvellous, original, fascinating story. Wonderfully written...and superbly read on the CD/Audio version. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a story to grab you right at the beginning.

This novel is very well written and the characters are very well developed. The story line is a creative one and I love how it's based on a actual offer made by an Indian Chief to President Grant. The author took something that happened in history and gave it his own spin. A wonderful journey to the past and a peek at what the Indians suffered through. I will highly recommend this!

This was an excellent novel. Brings to light the treatment that Indians suffered. Make sure you have a box of kleenes nearby!

I loved this book and had a hard time putting it down. The premise of sending white women (presumably all volunteers) to be wives to American Indians in order to have children together, and help assimilate both cultures, is interesting material. I found Jim Fergus's characters very appealing. It is a book of fiction, but indeed was based on an honest offer by a real Cheyenne Chief in the 1870's. This speculated story is full of colorful characters both white and native. Much the same as Larry McMurtry's stories, it is full of "caricaturized" personalities. It also gives us a good look from the inside of the Native American culture and life. I will pass this book to my sisters and children!

Loved this authors style of writing. Very believable and captivating reading. I will purchase more of his books and look forward to reading them.

I absolutely loved this book! It takes a little known historical fact and twists the end into a credible, however fictional story. I have recommended this book to all my friends, and have bought extra copies to give as gifts. The author pays particular attention to historic details, and makes you feel like you are actually time warped into a special event in history. His characters are wonderful and delightful. This is one of my all time favorite books!!
