Album Notes Steve Poltz is the cowriter of Jewel's "You Were Meant For Me." Jewel cowrote four songs with Poltz for this album. Personnel: Steve Poltz (vocals, guitar); John Wittenberg, Joy Lyle, Ziao N He, Joel Derouin, Steve Richards (strings); J. Steven Soles, Dean Parks, Jim Keltner, Jerry Scheff, Leland Sklar, Bob Glaub, Denny Fongheiser, Benmont Tench, Van Dyke Parks, Jewel Kilcher, Gregory Page, David Kemper. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones Horn Section: Dennis Brockenborough, Tim Burton, Kevin Lenear. Recorded at Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood, California. This introspective-but-fun album could also be called, "Live from Steve Poltz's apartment," as these songs feel like some of the mental musings one has alone in one's room. Jewel collaborator Poltz ("You Were Meant For Me") picks up his own steel-string and delivers engaging descriptions of his memories, mishaps and general life philosophies with an unapologetic dose of folk song cliche. With soft harmonies reminiscent of early Paul Simon he lets us know that, "Healthier ain't half as fun," and "If they tell me that I shouldn't, then I would." Many of the tunes have a grizzled but sweet Southern folk feel, with the occasional appearance of a clarinet or trombone solo like a sympathetic friend dropping by Poltz's house. An accordion, Hammond organ and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones' horn section are just some of the other guests at this little fiesta of textures. There's a natural mix of humor and sadness here, and thoughtful compositions to carry it along.
Editorial Reviews 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - ...a collection of subtly Hollywood-ish acoustic pop. He's go t a flexible, no-sweat voice, too, a light tenor that's all scuffed charm and strummy entitlement....a dusty mixture of craft and guts. Rolling Stone (05/14/1998)
