One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest~One of the All-Time Best

Jack plays one of his earliest and greatest roles in this thought provoking film. He tries to get off the hook by playinf "crazy" and winds up paying for it by spending time in a mental institution. The ever memorable nurse cratchet who cuts him absolutely no slack, and is non-plused at his boyish pranks. Filmed on location, this is an all time classic must see film, and leaves a lasting impression. Nicholson at his finest, especially when he gives his goulish grins just before mis-behaving. (Makes you think he might not be acting!!)He tries to get his fellow innmates to join his rebellion against the establishment, but he is often caught and punished-including electic shock treatment! Rate this one "two thumbs up" 5 Stars *****

The cast was outstanding from the main character to the least character. Jack Nicholson leads the plot with an ease that shows what a tremendous actor he is.
His part fit him to a"T". I've made the statement many times, that he plays a crazy man better than a crazy man would. Louise Fletcher is another part of this movie. A woman that you love to hate

This has always been my favorite move. It reminds me of when I was a Police Officer in New Jersey and we had to bring people to the Mental Institution in Secaucus.

This movie won several Academy Awards, and for good reason. The two main characters (Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher) give amazing performances, and the supporting cast is second to none in quality of supporting roles. Classic Nicholson and an all-great movie for the ages.

  Crazy Jack
Review created: 04/23/09

This movie was great. When you start to watch it you find yourself wondering, is the main character really just acting, or could he be crazy on SOME level somewhere? Also, the nurse in the movie starts out to be nice, as you go through the movie, you see her change into someone a bit more sinister. It's a great timeless movie with some awesome actors in it. Buy it, you will enjoy it! The only thing I didn't like was the ending....

This has been buzzing around my ears among my friends and without a doubt; it is one of the best films of all time. Mixing mental health with humor is a tough brand to sell; come to fine out it took several years for this movie to be made. Kirk Douglas had bought the rights hoping to star in it himself, but struggled to find a studio who would produce it; his son Michael eventually did it, but had the foresight to stay off the screen. When you watch it, it's not hard to work out why no-one would touch it - it's subject matter was just too quirky and controversial for Hollywood in the 60s. The film was ideal for representing a burgeoning discontent with society during the post-Vietnam malaise; its audience, like its characters, was feeling enormous dissatisfaction with rules, authority, government and the stupefying way it was treating its people. No wonder that it struck such a chord with cinema-goers.

Many liberties that we take for granted are explored within the narrative of the film: communication (in therapy sessions, where the nurse leads the discussion) freedom (during the 'escape') alcohol (during the party) sex (Billy's turn with the hooker McMurphy imports). The reactions of Nurse Ratched and the orderlies symbolize the reactions of authority when we digress from its designated path; the response of the inmates is to return to the routines and drudgery they entail. The analogy with the restrictive nature of society is glaring.

Enter Randle McMurphy, no respecter of rules or routines, a man who is riotous but also unselfish. Brilliantly played by Jack Nicholson (a masterly piece of casting) McMurphy challenges the established norms and routines of the hospital in pursuit of fun, which irks and then aggravates Nurse Ratched. The positive impact on the other patients is clear and noticeable; it suggests that there is value in breaking away from social expectations, in being spontaneous, in occasionally pursuing personal pleasure or individual goals beyond those authority grants to you. The conclusion suggests that those in authority will do anything to silence those who challenge the social order, but that freedom *is* ultimately accessible, whether by death (McMurphy) or escape (Chief Bromden).

Social analysis aside, the movie is great fun: there are a lot of laughs, a lot of thought-provoking moments, and a few tears. It's certainly one of the finest moments in cinematic history - it came at a time when it was drastically needed by the viewing public, but its content and themes are no less relevant and interesting to us today.

ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST
Review created: 07/28/08

Nickelson at his best. Petty criminal tries to circumvent the system by pretending to be insane only to have it backfire on him. He then tries to correct the injustices he sees while he is assigned to the mental hospital only to be interfeared with by the head nurse who is a controlling unyielding tyrant.

  Nicholson vs Nurse Ratchet
Review created: 06/01/08
by:
rej2 ( 616)

Classic movie with Jack at his best. The despicable nurse Ratchet is a truly despicable character who (accuarately)is empowered by a position of authority in a virtually unregulated institutional environment. As a mischievious small time criminal Jack "plays" mentally ill to get an easier sentence and he creates excitment and chaos in a previously controlled environment. It is an entertaining and sad story with many funny and anguishing moments. I highly recommend the movie and the (Ken Kesey) book.

This is my favorite movie of all times. This movie gives real insight as to how mental institutions used to be run and how people were treated. Jack Nicholson was "golden" in it and I think it is one of his best movies ever. It's funny, happy and sad all rolled into one. You won't be disappointed with this one!

I loved the movie when it first came out in the late 70's. I couldn't find it at the local video rental stores. I was pleased to find it on e-bay. The price was right so I purchased it. Satisfied customer.

  A classic

When i first read this book in school i was totally into it. Then watching the movie i noticed some things weren't directed as the way it was on the book. But you should read the book because it's more information. However this movie is a really good one. Very great acting especially Jack Nicholson. Quite a lot of profanity was used as well as violence and some gore. A few scenes showing some nudity so cover your eyes. A 2 hour long time.

Overall grade = A

Jack Nicholson is one of my favorite actors, so naturally the Move "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is excellent. I was much younger when this movie was first released. I had forgotten it ended so sad. Seeing it the first time after all these years, I recoginezed a lot of famous actors who I did not know at the time.

Wonderful movie and one everyone who has not seen, should!!!!!
