"Once Upon A Time In America"

I would rate this No.3 in the films in its kind. (No.1 "The Godfather", No. 2 "The Godfather II") The film is long but it has to be, I would have sat through it even if it was longer. Almost like watching a documentary through a beautiful story. It’s rough but in a strange way it’s beautiful. Above all it’s a smart film, these days most films are one dimensional, and does not make one think. I for one am tired of it. Producers and directors have become lazy. It’s more difficult to make a thinking film. Perhaps it’s the audiences fault. Anyway this film leave’s you with two things to wonder about. One, why is “Noodles” smiling at the end, and did James Woods jump in the garbage truck? I think it’s very courageous to end a film that way. I don’t know if today that type of ending would fly because today’s audience wants everything wrapped in one tight package.
As if I haven’t said enough about the film the music is haunting and beautiful. It wasn’t until I saw the extra’s in this package that I realized this film was so difficult to Sergio Leone when it was released. Now I realize why Director’s fight for final cut of their films. In a word Sergio Leone was a genius!
