Once Upon A Mattress (DVD, 2005)

Despite noble efforts by Tracey Ullman & Carol Burnett, this is a Disneyfied, homogenized, watered down, and snail-paced "pablum" version of what was once a fast-paced, rib splittingly funny show. They won't re-release either the 1964 monochrome telecast [the best] or the 1970 color remake [second best] but force this vastly inferior verson upon us. No, this show isn't for kids, it never was. It was meant as the "adult version" of the fairy tale. Try to find someone with a copy of the original if you can... it's an experience not to be missed! This DVD, however, IS an offering you can easily miss.

I really enjoyed this movie. A real classic. A friend recommended it, I wasn't disappointed. Carol Burnette is wonderful but so is everyone else. It was great to see Tom Smothers in a show. This was a hilariously funny movie. If you want to enjoy yourself watch this movie. Tracy Ulman was too funny as the Princess. Thoroughly enjoyable.

I loved this musical from the minute I watched a production of it by my university theatre department. I then discovered that Sarah Jessica Parker had done a broadway revival, listened to the CD recording of that and fell in love even more. I then went and bought the original Carol Burnett version, and still preferred SJP.

I bought this dvd only because of my love for the musical itself. The DVD doesn't really have much that I can rave about or recommend. For me, Carol Burnett does NOT shine as Aggravain and Tracey Ullman's Winifred paled in comparison to SJP (and I really am not an SJP fan in general!). It's a disney production so there's a fair amount of cheese, and I can't say that it's particularly suitable for younger kids. They also skipped some of my favourite pieces from the musical (many moons, yesterday I loved you) and threw in a new bit for Carol Burnett (baby of mine) that I felt didn't mesh well with the feel/style of the other numbers. They also ruined "spanish panic".
I only rated this dvd good because I love the musical so much, and because zooey deschanel's vocals were surprisingly good!

This is a fun little diversion. I bought it because I thought it would be similar to Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella, but it isn't what I expected. It's not as innocent as that show, but it's still fun. The cast is great. I just haven't let my 7-year-old watch it again because there is a pre-marriage baby and she doesn't know that's possible yet. I enjoy watching this and the Princess and the Pea was always one of my favorite fairy tales as a child.

I found this DVD to be very entertaining. There wasn't any point in the movie where I felt that I could slip away to grab some popcorn or get the phone without hitting the pause button. It gave me the feeling of being in NY watching a theatrical performance. I would not have bought this DVD but my daughters school is doing a musical on this play and she got the role of the Queen and her instructor suggested that she get this movie and watch it to get the flavor of her character. To my delight it wasn't a waste of money because our family has watched it numerous times and has had a great time doing so.

Love this movie! Our high school put it on for their Spring Musical, and my 10 year old son loved it. We gave it to him for his birthday .... really cute!

The movie was in excellent condition, and fun entertainment but it took about a month to arrive. Only buy from this person if you are not in any hurry to receive the item.

My sister was the Queen at the school play. I saw it twice. After I found out that there was a movie, I had to get it. I loved it! I keep singing the songs in my head. There's nothing I didn't like about it. Two thumbs up!

There is a movie with Carol Burnette as the princess and I hoped to find it but this is just as funny and something we enjoyed as a family.
It is nice to watch something without having to wince at the language or nudity or violence.
The story is charming and you are laughing and cheering when the controlling queen gets her comeuppance!
We will watch this many times and loan it out to friends.
If any one knows where I can get the other DVD please let me know.

Not the Disney type of movie you would expect. Bought it because local High School did play on the movie.

Purchased item for Children. They going to be in the musical Once upon a Matress. It is not not the junior version, but very entertaining.

This retelling of the fairy tale classic in which Carol Burnett character is in the lead iis only for her fans.

Wish it was a new, unopened copy, but it was in great shape otherwise. My wife had been looking for this movie for at least a year when I had found it on your site.
