  Amazing CD with instant classics

As most I am a huge Pink Floyd fan. So when I first heard of this CD coming out I could not wait to get my hands on it. It lived up to the hype and anticipation that surrounds anything a memeber of Pink Floyd does. Brilliant guitar work from Gilmour as always. My favorite track has to be "Blue" which ranks right up there with other greats from Floyd. This song to me is breath taking and I have listened to it dozens of times. On an Island is also an amazing song. You will not be dissapointed by this CD.

It makes me feel like I'm on a warm breezy island.

This CD is so very fine...It has that spacey, reflective mambo going on throughout, very sexy, warm, breezy island, drift-away sounds... Which may take you away to where you want to be... As Gilmour splashes his wonderful guitar in-n-out all through the concept tracks... Interesting, mesmerizing, laid-back thought provoking (mostly)instrumental loveliness...It's a different plane your riding on...Floating & stoney, but a sure ride...I can see that Blue Water right now and the introspective island we're all on, yet mostly chose to ignore...I adore Floyd just as I love where Gilmour is going here in his life...Surrounded by emptiness that we all feel from time to time and want to just get away, yet we are...we're just on an island...The music flows from track to track, with not any real surprises(but to me that the restrained beauty of this CD)... warm sunny feelings, days of contemplation...to get us just right...I'm always ready for the trippy, soaring Gilmour with Floyd However, this is just as incredibly moving and cool it's own way...A great musician throwing out some perfect sounds to create & set the mood...MTV will never have a place for this great laid-back & soaring at the right time music...But, there's always a place for this music in my life...Stoney Chris Rea would be quite comfortable along for the ride here...Gilmour shows what a cosmic master is capable of...When your done smiling and tripping...Well, perhaps you might put on something else that breaks this mood...(though, I listen to it over & over)...This is an eloquent, insightful, dreamy CD!

Compositions from a Pallette 40 Years Deep

I greatly awaited this CD and wasn't disappointed. If the various periods and albums of Pink Floyd music could be ascribed colors, this CD hits me as having shades of the entire spectrum. A hint of Interstellar Overdrive, Goodbye Blue Sky, Wish you were here,Us and Them woven into new music. I appreciate some of the other reviews that characterize this CD as too laid back but don't personally agree. It could be an age difference perhaps not, I'm 58 and have worshipped at the altar of Pink Floyd since the mid 60s, hence an appreciation for David Gilmours maturing process. Considering his age and life experiences as a musician, I've grown with him and have a deep connection to his music and poetry.

The sonics on this CD are incredible. Listened to through a high resolution audio system, you won't be disappointed. The bass and drums are punchy when they need to be. The guitar lines are vintage Gilmour and immediately an old friend mixed down familiarly to the sound of Pink Floyd of Darkside and Wish You Were Here. The vocals are equally well attended to. For a man of his age, he leaves nothing to be desired in terms of voice loss or guitar dexterity.

Too mellow, not in my opinion. No memorable songs, again, not in my opinion. Am I biased? Yes.Perhaps it's not for everyone but there is a taste of everything he's ever had a musical hand in within this CD. I highly recommend it to his fans and even newcomers looking for a mellow metal music with a definite edge and inspired artistry.

This guitarist / musician is one of a kind. Read about Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page regarding their sincere respect for this man. I hope he is around for a long time to come and continues to share his love of music with the rest of us that have traveled with him and enjoyed his gifts.

After a long hiatus David Gilmour is back with a solo album. Probably a liitle more mellow than his previous solo ablbums. The guitar playing is first rate and the album shows a lot of maturity. Perfect music for a long drive through the mountains.

Worth the Wait from Mr. Gilmour

"On An Island", the 3rd solo release from Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour, is an instant excursion into an almost zen-like state of mind. Don`t expect any up-tempo Floyd-type rockers like "Money" or "Run Like Hell"; (if you do, you may be in for a let-down.) The mood is one of comfort and exudes a laid-back smoothness, punctuated with his trademark exquisite guitar soloing and unmistakeable voice. The title cut, "Blue", and "Where We Start" are my favorite tracks. I get the feeling that David Gilmour has given us a glimpse into his world with this release; a world in which he finds himself very content and reflective. This CD will no doubt leave you feeling much the same. I am a big Floyd/Gilmour fan, and knew I wouldn`t be disappointed by adding it to my music collection.

David Gilmour - On An Island

Pink Floyd is one of my favorite bands or rock. They're a british band and are peopled by fabulous musicians. David Gilmour is one of my favorite guitarists and his style of singing has kept Pink Floyd on the charts for many years. Since Pink Floyd hasn't released an album since 1994 I was very excited that David Gilmour has released his third solo album this year. On An Island is smooth with sophisticated guitar alluring vocals. It is reminiscent of Pink Floyd music but without the soulful call of Roger Waters. On An Island is a classic and no lover of Pink Floyd should be without it. It has the ability to attract a new audience that will open the doors to a large Pink Floyd library. This album is long overdue and it is exceptional.... DC in San Diego..

  On an Island- David Gilmour

I bought On an Island- David Gilmour after reviewing several selections, and highly recommend it. It gives me permission to relax, and inhale for a while.
Gilmour's guitar is clean and satisfying. His vocals are mellow, and as I listen I'm compelled to pay attention to details such as tasty instrumental bits, great harmonies, and interesting lyrics. This works. Every track is good, too. "This Heaven" is my personal favorite right now because it's sassy. The guitar riff stays with me long after I stop the CD. I listen to On an Island while driving to and from work, and let it take me away for a few minutes. "So break the bread, and pour the wine. I need no blessings, but I'm counting mine." Outstanding. Buy a copy for your mom, sister, and brother. Dedicate "Smile" to them. It's infinitely listenable, and well done. Thank you, FairBecca

  Gilmour's Third Recording

The long anticipated third recording from the legendary Pink Floyd guitarist. With accompanying vocals by David Crosdy and Graham Nash, this CD has the Pink Floyd sound without the hard edge. A smooth journey into the mind and music of David Gilmour.

This artist is a genius. I bought this CD to replace the one that I had that was damaged beyond repair.

Pink Floyd and David Gilmour solo: "Must haves" in music collection or it would not be complete.

  Gilmour in Love
Review created: 06/10/06
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

David Gilmour is back with more of the elegiac guitar-playing and soul-searching lyrics that have become synonymous with his name. This time, though, it appears David has found blissful love, and "On An Island" features songs such as the bluesy "This Heaven" and the zen-like "Where We Start" that will strike Gilmour fans as uncharacteristic. With lyrics such as "Where we start is where end, we step out sweetly, nothing planned . . . There's just this moment," some may miss the angst of previous Gilmour works, but for those prepared to accompany Gilmour on his journey of spirit, "On An Island" will be a delight.

  Not David's Best...

I was disappointed with this CD. I'm a HUGE Floyd fan and have genuinely loved Gilmour's solo efforts of the past...but this one just left me flat...even after multiple listens. It just seems to lack melody. He has come out with some absolutely killer melodies in the past, but I can't rest my hat on even one tune on this CD...nice try Dave. See ya next time. In the meantime, I'll catch Waters in September.

This is a fantastic album...I also bought the Live in Gadansk cd/dvd set by David Gilmour, and it's all incredible. Soaring guitar work, if you wanna relax with great music, smooth, breathy music, this is a must-have. David Gilmour has reverted to the "Dark Side of the Moon" atmosphere of slow, space-filled guitar rock with a masterful hand. Get this cd, you will not regret it! Then get the Live in Gadansk dvd, it'll blow your mind!

Gilmour really needs to retire as this latest compilization of boring, repetetive and meaningless "music" is really bad. Its a shame this once great musician has gotten this bad. Kudos to the seller but please don't sell this CD to anyone...it sucks!!!

David Gilmour On Island Cd not to like or to love for any Floyd fan.Not up to par with his first 2 solo Albums released.Gilmour`s effort and colaboration is o.k with too much back up trying to do too many things. The guitar work is recognizable and voiced well and gives any Floyd fan the enjoyment of listening or relaxation.Give this lp C++
