McKillip definitely got the title right with "shadow." This book was so dark, but always managed to light up a bit just when you thought all was hopeless. She skillfully draws you into the story so quickly you would think the book itself were bewitched. It makes it really hard to put it down.
Ombria in Shadow was written with the eloquence and grace that I can only find when reading one of McKillip's.
The characters are full of personality and mysteries of their own that begin to surface through the shadows.
